For the last 3 days every time I start the PC the screen starts 640 x 480 pixels and 4 bit...... ?

It often takes up to 12 attempts to get it to stay at 1280 x 1024 which I like. Often it appears to set but click apply and the screen stays the same... ? At the same time my desktop setting have gone, now is a black screen with icon all together on the left, I change this and all is fine for 6 or 7 minutes then it goes back to black and the icons again move to the left...

The PC has worked fine for over 2 years.... I have today re installed the driver for the graphic card + updated but still the same...

I have avast! Antivirus Pro, Advanced SystemCare Pro and Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware....... ALL show as the PC is clean and free from bugs...

I have Vista for over 1 year, and a Asus Ge Force 8600GT for over 2 years........... The only real problem was about 6 weeks ago when some word documents would not open... I downloaded Open Office 3.1...

Help Please...

If I need to pop in a new graphics card is the Ge Force 9600GT any good?

Don't waste your time and get a new card.

IMHO that one is at the end of life...

Yes thanks

Is the 1 GB/EN-9600GT ASUS any good?

Highly unlikely that it is graphics card. Never experienced nor heard of anything like this.

I had this issue with some customers. Specially with GeForce.

But you are right. It might be another error source - a wrong or corrupt video driver

To see what your computer "thinks" you have, right click on My Computer, click on properties, click on the hardware tab, and then click on Device Manager. Expand the node labeled Display adapters by clicking on the boxed plus sign in front of it.

If it says something like "default" display adapter, then Windows does not know what kind of adapter you have, and what its capabilities are it displays

the lowest resolution: 640x480.

9600GT is good but may be an overkill if you are not into gaming, although the are not expensive. You may want to check if your power supply is up to the job also

Yes it has a yellow ? after Nvidia GeForce 8600GT

'Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)

Click 'Check for solutions' to send data about this device to Microsoft and to see if there is a solution available.'

This is the reason I uninstalled and then re installed the original drivers [Nothing changed] and also updated the driver also nothing changed.

Also tried Windows update, say I have the newest driver and that the card is working correctly... tried the roll back driver. Everything I tried still shows it has a yellow ? in the Device Manager

I never have air con switched on, so have a ? better power supply

I have a 650 WATT COOLER MASTER like wise have a COOLER MASTER CPU copper pipe fan, fitted twin fans to both my HDD's and fitted much larger fans in the tower case

As there is very little difference in the price of the 512/EN and the 1 GB/EN I thought it would be better to go with the bigger one.?

have ypu tried uninstalling the drivers and reinstall latest version?

Yes and still get a yellow ? in the Device Manager

Buy a new card as I recommended in my very first post or have that PC checked by a tech guy.

Take it to the shop where you want buy that card. You could bring only the card to a repair shop and have

it tested. That gives you at least proof whether its down or not.

Could be some faulty motherboard, maybe not. But with new drivers already installed I trust its the card!

I can't take a look at your PC so the correct diagnosis is not easy. Most likely hardware issue.

Have been putting off building a new PC as this one was working so well..........

Saying that a few months ago bought a new WD 640 HDD, a couple of weeks ago bought a new better Motherboad....

So if I need to buy a new Graphics card, I may as well pop in a new bigger CPU, at the time I built this one the largest AMD was 4200, now they have the 7850

So Graphics Card the 512/EN or the 1 GB/EN less than 1,000 baht difference in price.

So CPU... AMD 7850+ ATHLON X2 is what I was thinking, but is there any real advantage in buying the PHENOM II 920 cost 3x the amount ? both fit my new Motherboard.

Will go out later, so if any info on the above would greatly help, Thanks

Edit: Yes I have looked at the reviews, but don't fully understand, this is why I'm asking

550 watt PSU would do the job so you have plenty of head room, check the price of the 9800 GPU as they have come down a long way in price.

Couldn't you plug the monitor into the Motherboard graphics slot? That would show if the card was faulty or not :)

That is if it has one, mostly only low end MB's that have on board graphics.

Just got back put the new card in and all works wonderful, bought the GF9600 GT Acrtic Cooling 1GB card... with 3 year warranty

Stay away from Nvidia GPU cards

Already bought now.... but every since my 1st PC well over 20 years ago I have always had Nvidia cards in every PC [about 10] and my 3 laptops + all have been AMD CPU.

So also bought a new CPU... AMD 7850+ ATHLON X2 also with 3 year warranty, so next project will be to rebuild....

Just for interest, prices appear very good

GF9600 GT Acrtic Cooling 1GB card 2,990 baht

AMD 7850+ ATHLON X2 2,350 baht

check the price of the 9800 GPU as they have come down a long way in price.

They had this but was more than I wanted to pay 7,190

Many thanks everyone

I have a long happy run with succesive Nvidia GPU's, although now running a ATI 4870X2 as it was quite a bit faster than the Nvidia product at the time.

My preference is Intel CPU as they use less power and run cooler, as do nvidia cards compared to ATI the 4870X2 would easily cook an egg while at idle if you placed it at the rear exhaust vent.
