About the discovery of a หนูหิน (yes, a rock rat) that had been thought to be extinct.

There is a cartoon series called หนูหิ่นอินเตอร์, which has a thai wikipedia page.

ie. it could be a reference to the main character in this cartoon.

It must have been หนูหิ่นอินเตอร์ not หนูหิน

It's the haircut. The one being called หนูหิ่น had that hair style.
