Steve Hammet, Chief Executive Officer at Tesco Lotus, confirmed that Tesco is launching the retailer loyalty program Club Card as of 20th August 2009.

•Thailand is now the seventh country where the Club Card will be available.

•Tesco hopes it will attract four million members in the first year.

•The roll out will coincide with the celebration of Commerce Day, when the largest retailers in the market are able to offer discounts as high as 50%.

Hammet stated “Compared to other competitors, nobody has a scheme like us - it is free to join, we offer cash coupons, there is no minimum requirement and you can redeem at all 62 stores nationwide."

Good news.

Will there be special points for re-using shopping bags?

I hope so, I have seen people in lotus Samui buy lets say 20 items and put one item in it's own bag.

When they could have just used may be 4 bags for all.

How does the discounting work at Tesco? Similar to Tops where with specials there are two prices listed, loyalty card vs. no loyalty card? They don't actually expect people to carry paper COUPONS do they? That is so primitive.

If it works in a similar way to Tesco in the Uk that would be good.

For spending a given amount £1 in the Uk you get one point added to your card.

At the end of 3 months you are sent a statement and vouchers to the value of your points collected. ie 500 points= £5.

You can spend this vouchers on almost anything within the store, I say almost anything as i believe tobacco and one or two other products are exempt in the Uk.

Well done to the Thai goverment, just like in the uk your tesco club card will be used to track your spending, what you're buying and how much you are spending. Think very carefully before you get a tesco card, do you want the Thai goverment tracking your spending? Call me paranoid but the less any goverment knows about my finances (None of their business) the better.

for the same reason I denied to extend my customer card at PARAGON/MALL-GROUP, which they now changed to a new system called "M-Card". when I wanted to pay at the cashier at the Paragon supermarket lately, they told me the card is not valid anymore, and I would have to change to M-Card (which I knew before, because they had sent me a letter to my home, telling about the changes, though mentioning the replacement of the old card could be done until end of September).

when i told them that they actually have my personal data already and asked them to issue and print a new card on the spot, they told me that they now need my Passport-number (!) for that.

I told them I will not give them my passport number as it's none of their d*mned business, and the only authorities I will give my passport numbers when asked are the Immigration offices, Police or Banks in case I open a bank account.

oh and I am certainly NOT paranoid, but undoubtfully this country is on a good way to "1984" (did you already forget the new internet-laws ?). amazing Thailand :)

What has the Thai government got to do with this? This is a Tesco Lotus loyalty card scheme. Yes they have data on you, but in the UK they use this to send you extra discount coupons each quarter towards goods you have actually bought. And it's great data for Tesco too. They know what is being bought at its stores by what age group. It helps them with store stocking for new stores etc, meaning you are much more likely to find what you want on the shelf. It is good news.

In the UK, goverment departments have access to the data, I know of atleast 1 man who was a taxi driver and was caught fiddling his income tax, they caught him through his tesco club card that he used to buy diesel. How did the relevant department get the data?

So the Inland Revenue did an investigation on him for fiddling his taxes and will have to have got a court order compelling Tesco to provide information. Standard routine in an investigation. But you are wrong to say the Government has access to the data because it does not without a court order. :) Mr paranoid ... have to smile.

You invited people to call ypu paranoid, so her goes

You are paranoid

So, how many taxi drivers and others do you actually know that are part of this covert government surveillance.

I think I'll stick to the card being a loyalty card that Tesco uses for marketing purposes benefiting customers and themselves

Hello, I do not see this club car as being relevent to most people as the savings do not add to much. It could make a difference for the very poorest of people with a large family to feed, but for most of us it is a small gimmick. I have nothing to hide so why would anyone care what people buy as the company can see what it sells from the computer, but they can target people with their advertising so it is more for the good of the company. Cheers.

If the Thai government wanted to track your spending, they do not need a Tesco Club card to do it.

and no one here owns a makro membership card or a makro/citibank credit card....?

by the way, the tesco credit card used to offer a 3% discount/rebate on purchase of gasoline. but now there is only a 1% rebate.

we purchased lots of food items each month to feed many mouths.... now if there is someone gonna watch what we eat, we gotta go some place else, because we eat lots and lots and we do not eat pretty either.... lol and that tesco credit card is still sitting pretty in its safe corner.... lol
