Just to remind users of all the fake faulty rubbish on sale in Pantip Plaza IT city centre in BKK. I bought a Kingston 4Gb SD card the weekend , guess what it never worked, It would not open when connnected to notebook or inside my Digital camera, I returned to the seller and the guy was not interested in refund or replace. . Its incredible this place continues to be able to operate , A hive of crooks and cheats , just remember its not just the software and DVD hawked there that's fake

With Thai people, you just need to calmly show them you will not

take NO for an answer, especially when you know you are in the right.

They will eventually yield to avoid confrontation as they hate that more than

almost anything.

Just keep making your case politely and you will more often than not

get what you need.

I'm with GD, not been to Pantip for years, got fed up with the constant hassle from touts with 'sexy movie', Fortune if I'm in town or Zeer Rangsit if I'm not.

Zeer is well worth a look if you're in Rangsit for any reason, far bigger than Pantip or Fortune.

Agreed about the sexy movies, I've only been to Pantip once, but already after one visit I didn't like it.

I live in Hua Hin and are really a novice in the Thailand map, where is Rangsit located?

I think it is not a problem with Pantip. It is a problem with humans. You can get the fake in USA, in Europe, in Singapore or wherever. When I sometimes need one of the expensive Sony batteries for my video camera I always think if the up to 5000 Baht battery might be a fake or not. Almost impossible to check and not even the Sony batteries are without problems . Sometimes I think better to buy a cheap one where I know that it is fake then I am on the safe side - they are a fraction of the Sony price.

What I often do is to buy such items at the bigger shops like IT City in the hope the employees have no need to cheat me since they will not get the money. But on the other hand a friend of mine bought a new notebook in such a shop - and we insisted that it is packed originally. They ordered it and when we went there to pick it up the box was open - "we had the check that all parts are inside". I set the system up for my friend and saw at the S.M.A.R.T. data of the HD how long it has been used before and how many times it was switched on. It was switched on/off almost 200 times and the HD was working for several weeks already. So they sold us a notebook that has been on display for a while I am afraid.

But you can make the same experience in the States when they send you a re-stocked item as new. Earning money is not easy. Spending it afterwards for quality is not easy too :-)

Yup...one of my biggest gripes...I actually feel insulted by the "in your face" attitude of these guys. Finally one day I stopped, looked the guy directly in the face, and said in a quiet but very firm voice, "Mai ow," and walked away. He actually came after me and -- believe it or not -- apologized. He seemed truly embarrassed.

Oh, I think there's a gross difference. In the US you have to go looking for it. Here the fake stuff comes looking for you the minute you walk in the door of Pantip.

At least you might not meet Madoff and his friends and their fakes in Pantip :-)))

Hi.

Has the "fake" memory card got any warranty sticker on it, such as "Synnex"..? If so there is no need to go to the place where you bought it, go straight to the Synnex customer service and get it replaced there. I just had a HDD replaced a few weeks ago, didn't even have the receipt - no problem at all, within 20 minutes (including wait time!) i had a new one.

4 GB SD cards are ridiculously cheap even genuine, i don't think you got a fake - probably just a non-functioning one, which can happen (happened to me once before with an MMC card and once with a thumb drive, too, but then i buy a lot of them). Even the fake ones usually work (i have a couple of fake "Sony" Memory Sticks and they work just like the real one which i have as well, but for a fraction of the real one's price).

Best regards.....

Thanh

I also recommend Zeer, that is, if you're in Rangsit or surrounding areas. I shopped there for the first time two months ago. But like everywhere else in Thailand, beware of fakes. It's more 'organized' than Pantip that's for sure. And best of all, Zeer is devoid of XXX movie touts. Not that I'm not interested, but I prefer to download that stuff on my own. :)

I always find it funny that the staff handle the cards by the actual components. My training and belief is to only handle PCB by the sides and corners.

Am I correct?

Yes you are correct.

The issue is static electricity.

All professional environments put a circuit card in a conductive plastic sleeve if it is

not in the system. And on a production or test mfg line, all employees operate

in a static controlled station so they and the table are grounded.

The problem is insidious because static charge will degrade a semiconductor junction

cumulatively. So each time you damage the IC, it becomes closer to failure and you

will have no idea when failure will strike. This drives the MTBF and lifetime statistics

guys crazy. So well controlled handling is essential.

If you must touch a board out of a system, handling by the edges may be the best you can do

if conductive plastic sleeve is not available.

  • 2 weeks later...

The most hilarious thing I see in Pantip is when they wrap a television or a computer monitor in shrink wrap (apparently to magically make it new again) then run it all day with all the ventilation holes blocked, and try to sell it to you. Common sense alone should tell one that is a bad idea. The porno touts are also a pain-in-the-ass. I live in the World's biggest brothel, why would I want to watch a dirty movie?

Yes you are!

I am always amazed by how they handle all kind of chips with leaving their finger prints on the boards contacts.

It will be dark corroded spots after some time.

ESD damage is by the high humidity not very likely and chips in a circuit are better protected than loose parts.

I gasped the first time I saw a "techie" remove and re-insert a PCI card while the system was up and running. :)

But the 5 to 12 volts feeding the PCI card slot is so low...what could it hurt!! :)
