Shower Problems

I have had a water heater installed in my house to heat a shower and bath water .

The problem is that when I just run the water in the bath it is hot but when I switch it to the shower it runs cold.

Any ideas or suggestions appreciated

I had the same problem. There wasn't enough flow from the shower head for the heater to work properly. Took apart the head, and pryed out the water saver thingy. Now the head flows lots of water, and it is warm.

Perhaps a little diagnostics.

Is your water heater equipped with a light indicating when it is heating? If so does it indicate heating water when you have the shower on?

If not, heater not connected to your shower water supply.

If yes and still no hot water at shower, it may indicate insufficient presure to activate the water heater, do you have a water pump?

Certainly try water restricter removal as suggested.

The most common problem with these things is water pressure. Most homes have a shallow well pump as standard (small round dumpy unit), which simply cannot provide enough through flow pressure for the internal pressure switch to activate the heating element. If removing the restrictor doesn't work then it's likely you need a higher pressure pump. You don't mention if this is a shower type instantaneous water heater or a standalone instantaneous heater - they are different! If it is the latter and the shower head is too far from the heater unit but the bath outlet is nearer, this again suggests a pressure problem which is why you get hot water at the bath but not at the shower.

As a matter of interest if you have purchased a stand alone Siemens type instantaneous water heater then unless you have a minimum 30 to 35 psi of water pressure it won't work. If in doubt contact Llanna Lytics an excellent local company specialising in water delivery systems. Your description of the problem and my own experience suggest you need a high pressure Grundfos or similar pump but be aware you are looking at 15,000 Baht or more!

As a matter of interest if you have purchased a stand alone Siemens type instantaneous water heater

You can also go to some of the shops along the north moat, such as Kuntiraphans, and buy a surplus 10-15 gallon industrial plastic container, preferable black. You can fill this thing up in the morning, leave it outside in an unshaded spot and return home to a container filled with warm water even in the winter time. It worked wonders for our home in the years before they brought in the electricity and it still works well. But then again, I prefer a Thai style shower to standing under a trickle of water.
