Hi All,

I am currently in Japan airport taking a Singapore Airline flight via Singapore for my return trip to Bangkok.

The lady at the desk told me I must buy an outbound ticket for Thailand from Singapore in order to gain entry into Thailand.

My understand is that I can get a Visa on Arrival for 15 days on landing in Bangkok - counter to her claim.

Can anyone clear this up for me before I get into Singapore in about 6 hours?

Many thanks,

P.

It would have helped to state your passport - from previous post you appear to be UK and not allowed a 15 day visa on arrival. You can obtain a 30 day visa exempt entry but that will require onward transportation within 30 days (as the airline has told you).

She was correct in so far as the rules are written, but they do not seem to be consistently enforced here. To enter Thailand your supposed to have a valid outbound ticket, although in reality they rarely check. Thailand tends to be very inconsistent between what the law says and what they actually do, but the woman at the airline was technically correct in her advice.

Right, Thai immigration very rarely, if ever, checks, but it is the airline that often checks and requires the onward ticket within 30 days from arrival if the passenger has no visa for Thailand.

The IATA database, to which all airlines have access, details the immigration requirements for Thailand. To enter on visa exempt entry you must have an airline ticket out of the country within 30 days. If the airline allows you to travel in breach of that condition, and you are refused entry into the Kingdom, the airline will have to pay to repatriate you. Most airlines are therefore not willing to take that risk.
