My building in Ploenchit is shaking-----not as bad as 26th Dec - but quite vigorous.

I am in Phuket, near the northwest corner --- about 15 min ago (11:10) I felt a quake that was very similar to the one 2 hours before the tsunami hit.

My TV is out --- anybody getting any info?

Yes, I just saw it on the earthquake.usgs.gov website. Make no mistake: It is recorded with a 8.5 magnitude! That's almost as strong as the Dec 26th tremor!

Have a look here: http://earthquake.usgs.gov/recenteqsww/Qua...quakes_all.html

Are we again the only ones realizing what is happening? Is the government on alert? Are they busy evacuating? Or are they again just doing nothing?

It's only been a 20 minutes since it happened...they're probably deciding whether to evacuate or not (they've got a couple hours before a tsunami would hit).

Wow you guys are fast! I also experienced almost identical sensations to the December quake at our condo in BKK, Bangkoknoi. I am not sure if it was shorter though, or whether being in the evening meant I was less aware of when it began (on our floor, it is not so much shaking as strange noises from the structure). The December one seemed to continue steadily for at least 45 seconds, but this one I only noticed for 20-30 seconds at most.

Thai TV news is saying that it's now upgraded to 8.5 on the scale, which is a lot more than 8.2 since the scale is exponential. (About 2 gigatons for 8.2 and 5 gigatons for 8.5, if you want to use the TNT analogy)

Thai TV has already told people to get away and go to higher ground in the six southern provinces. Do not know what local action is being taken.

8.2 earthquake registered off Sumatra

Magnitude is nearly as large as tsunami quakeBREAKING NEWS

MSNBC staff and news service reports

Updated: 12:02 p.m. ET March 28, 2005A large earthquake was registered Monday off Indonesia's Sumatra Island, the U.S. Geological Survey reported, describing it as a "great earthquake" with a magnitude of 8.2 on the Richter scale.

The USGS advised officials in the area to move people inland, and Thai officials were among the first to issue a tsunami warning for the Andaman Sea.

No reports of injury or damage had been received from the region. The Dec. 26 quake that launched the massive tsunami was a 9.0, the USGS said.

Monday's quake epicenter was just off the northern Sumatra coast and between two smaller islands, and located at 18.6 miles underground. It occured at around 11 p.m. local time.

This report will be updated as information becomes available.

They say on CNN that it's 8.2 and that a tsunami could be generated. :o

It's better to be safe than sorry so everyone should seek higher ground just in case.

US Geol Survey also says that tsunamis are possible.
