Commercial English Gaffes

Cinema at the emporium: They have paintings of famous actors on the left wall as you walk in past the ticket guys..The guy from Harry Potter is called Daniel "Ladcliffe"

Very sad indeed.

Bit off topic, but heard something else about the Emporium this week. While all the hi-so wannabe shoppers were walking around, they were playing the uncensored version of that (awful) "F* you, I don't want you back" tune over the PA system.

How apt.

There is such a wealth of such signs, brochures and advertisements in Thailand  with English so poor that it often becomes unintentionally funny.  An English teacher with a camera could amuse and instruct his classes by taking snapshots ......

Most of the English teachers I know would probably not notice the mistakes :o

I once saw a notice in a hotel in Pattaya.

It was trying to warn people not to smoke in bed.

The sign was a cigerette in a red circle with an X through it.

The English said,"Hey you, be safety life in bed."

Does anyone know about the Far Eastern Economic Review?

They always have a page called "Traveller's Tales" which has stories about mistranslations from/into English.

One of my favorites was the sign in a Malay hotel that didn't want female guests in single male's rooms.

It said, "Hotel guests must not entertain unescorted young women in their rooms. A place is reserved in the hotel reception area for that purpose."

Rather kind of them I thought.

I saw a sign on one of the street-sellers in Soi 4 last night. Atop a large pile of crispy grasshoppers it read 'grass shoppers!'

How about the name of this home decorating tv show :o

This one would leave many customers wondering about the purpose of this ad...

And why is the monkey laughing? :o

There's a TV show by the name"you know me a little go"--a deliberate literal translation of "khun roo chak chan noi pai"
