The VDU has ‘died’ on my daughters desktop, it must be five years old now and way past it’s best, even tapping the VDU doesn’t make it work. Is there anyway that I can access the desktop hard drive from my laptop, drive my laptop screen with it? I’m running Win7 Enterprise, she just wants to check if she needs to pull off any information. Please don't tell me that she should have done it somewhile ago.

I guess an alternative would be to get a 2nd hand VDU and leave it in the spare bedroom, she uses her laptop anyway. About what should I expect to pay for a working VDU, I guess nearly anything, fourteen or fifteen inches, would do.

If she just worried about security I would pull the drive and destroy it as if five years old not worth keeping.

If there may be information she wants to keep you could use a cheap monitor (but have you confirmed the VDU is really dead - tried it with your laptop?).

You can buy external case for HD but probably not worth the price for such an old drive.

You could buy a large monitor to use with your laptops later for movie viewing.

Maybe a TV could do the trick. Providing that her computer has some sort of video out and your TV the opposite. Also you would need a cable to accomplish it.

Pretty much all laptops only have VGA out, so no way of using that as display.

About getting a 14-15 inch to save money, then first of all it's not easy finding those small old models and second they are barely cheaper than the cheapest 17" models, actually some 19" models now also compete about being the cheapest LCD option available.

A third option would be to take out her hard drive and hook it into a data recovery adater or a docking station/drive bay and just plugging it into your laptop and take whatever data you want. Harddisk enclosures for 2.5" drives are available for less than 200 baht for the cheaper models.

Edit: oops, pardon me. You would of course need a 3.5" hdd enclosure for the desktop drive. Those are more expensive, close to 1000 baht. Then a data recovery adapter set is actually cheaper. But maybe not as useful to you if it's only for this one time.

Why are you worried about the HD? It's the VDU (which I assume you mean the video display or monitor) is bad. Just get another video display or monitor and plug it in. Every thing should be fine other than the fact the computer old. The two are unrelated. You can pick up a used monitor for 1000-2000baht. New one 3500B and up.
