Crime Chiang Mai Bank Robber Caught After Buying Motorbike with Stolen Cash

A lone male suspect who carried out a daring midday bank robbery on 21 April, in Chiang Mai and made a cool getaway on a red songthaew has been arrested just hours after the heist. The robbery occurred at 12:00 noon at the Kasikorn Bank’s Nong Prateep branch in the Tha Sala subdistrict of Mueang District. Police from Mae Ping Station, along with senior officers from Provincial Police Region 5, swiftly responded to the scene. CCTV footage showed a small-built man, dressed entirely in black and wearing a face mask, entering the bank alone. Armed with a foot-long knife, he approached a female teller and forced her to hand over a brown envelope containing approximately 42,000 baht in cash. The robbery took less than five minutes. Displaying remarkable composure, the suspect exited the bank, crossed the road, and boarded a red songthaew, heading towards the San Kamphaeng district. Police immediately launched an intensive manhunt, examining CCTV footage and tracing the escape route. By the late afternoon, the suspect, identified as 26-year-old Mr. Ariya from Nan Province, was arrested at a roadside shelter. Investigations revealed that after fleeing the bank, the suspect paid 300 baht via mobile transfer to the songthaew driver to be dropped at the Promenada intersection. He then hailed a Grab taxi to a local shop, where he used the stolen cash to purchase a red motorbike. Tracking his mobile signal, police determined that he was heading north towards Chiang Rai. Officers pursued him along the Chiang Mai–Chiang Rai road and eventually intercepted him at a roadside shelter in the Doi Nang Kaew area. During a search, police found the stolen cash hidden in the suspect’s shoes and seized the registration book of the newly purchased motorbike. Both were taken as evidence.
