Man Killed After He Forgets To Retract Motorbike Stand.

Pattaya, November 19 [PATTAYA ONE NEWS] : Early on Thursday Morning, Police Captain Pornchai from Sattahip Police Station was called to the scene of a fatal road accident on the Sukumvit Road close to the Pattaya Boundary. Khun Wunchai, a 53 year old Thai Man, who worked part-time at the Sattahip Navy Base, was killed in the single vehicle road accident. His Wife, Khun Sompit aged 38, who was travelling as passenger on the bike ridden by her Husband escaped only with minor injuries and explained to Police that the bike suddenly flipped as the pair drove at speed along the road and her Husband was thrown from the bike and hit a street pylon which caused him to sustain a suspected broken neck. Police confirmed that the stand had not been retracted when their journey began, and during their journey it came into contact with the road which caused the accident.

I see this happen many times each day(BIKES being ridden with the stands down)....you think all new bikes would be fitted with those cut out switches that prevent the bike being ridden with the stand down.

Unfortunate accident. RIP.

I agree, it would cost nothing to add these cut out switches and save lives. RIP.

And wear a helmet too.

How does a stand cause the accident?

Is it hinged at the back?

I would have thought if it was hinged at the front, it would simply drag

on the ground causing a few sparks.

If they are hinged at the back then yes that is a very bad design!

An accident waiting to happen!

I have to put my hand up i have done it once or twice over the years, luckily somebody, or i have noticed before anything has happened , I now have a habit of feeling for the stand with my leg when i am on the move, It really does not matter how the stand is hinged , it just digs in the road and you are thrown sideways, At speed you could go under another car or like the poor unfortunate man hit something substantial. RIP to him

1. There is no switch on many motorcycles, even on recent one. My Wave is 5 years old and don't have it.

2. Wear a helmet. Even if it doesn't help for a broken neck, it's not a loss of time to write it in every post. So many lives could have be saved by wearing a helmet. And to many foreigner with absolutely no skills riding bikes don't wear it.

You wear the helmet, but don't preach to the rest of us. It may be the law, but it is also a choice. Life is filled with risks. Some of us like it; some are risk averse. I would rather be dead with a smashed head that paralyzed with a broken neck.

The law aside, yes it is a choice.

You might rather be dead with a smashed head - have you never seen permanent brain injury? People who are alive with brain injury, not able to function without assistance, never able to ride, barely able to walk???

I've had to work with such people. They tend to be rather bitter. It's not the life they would have chosen.

But as you say - your choice.

This will be hard to describe in words.

When the stand is fully extended, its on an forward facing angle, so the leg part touching the ground is in front of the hinged part. So if the rider takes off with it fully extended and one of the first turns he/she does is a left handed one and she does it quiet sharply, theres the risk that it will dig in.....many time you see the stand partly closed which is never really a problem because the bottom leg part of it is behind the hinged section and if it touches with the road it will just close on itself.

I have a switch on my bike, if first gear is engaged with the stand down the engine stalls when the clutch is let out....bike made in thailand, its 3 years old.

Well your right it is a choice whether or not you wear a helmet, speed, ride like a <deleted> etc etc.....but its funny or not so funny in western parts of the world where people chose to do these things and when they are in an accident they tend to rely on the government (tax payer) funded hospital schemes for their patch up and repair work or in the case of living out there years as a vegtable, very expensive health care.

The ones that always go on about choice & standing up to societies laws convienantly forget about this. :)

Some of the comments are simply ridiculous!

I believe it is simpler than the non existent switch. In Europe motor bikes have a spring to retract the stand when weight is taken off it ie. when the bike is pushed upright.

Story is this was too technical for the US market (guys wold go into the dealer sit on the bike upright and then get off...) we are stuck with sprung down.

I have to confess I have ridden away myself with the stand down, usually double check now.

My condolences to the family, friends and colleagues. Very sad. I don't have a motorbike anymore, but have done the same thing. I was always in the city and not traveling particularly fast, but it's really quite scary when making a turn and the stand hits the ground.

It's very sad to loose a life just for the sake of forgetting to kick the stand back. I suspect that the smaller the bike the easier it is for the stand to flip the bike over.

I used to ride a BSA Gold Star and was always forgetting the kick stand but with a big bike it just jars the frame when you hit the ground.

Given the cost to society of supporting people with such injuries why should it be his choice?

Now I'll bet there's not a single falung here who's ever owned a motorbike and never absentmindedly forgot to retract the kickstand while in a hurry (that includes yours truly).

Lesson to be learned what can happen...

Sad story :)

I have done it a few times but luckily found out before anything happened.

I know Honda have it on their new bikes that it can no start if the stand is down, explanation given by the dealer were that to many accidents happened because of the stand being down.

Sad story he lost his life and his wife lost a husband :D
