I thought I might check in and say that I had a great trip. I want to thank all the expats who helped with all the info that made everything so much easier and enjoyable. This forum is a wondeful place and I for one am grateful.

I got my visa a week or so before leaving... I got a flight from Florida to LA and then China Airlines to Teipei and BKK. I was going to take the bus to town, but I met a German guy and he said 'come on' we'll take a metered taxi to the train station... 270 baht total which we split. It was lucky as if I had been an hour later I would not have gotten a ticket to Nong Khai for the night trip. As it was I got my ticket and wandered around while I waited. The train was clean and my bed OK and I slept the night after the long flight. China Airlines was great... good food and good service including free movies, etc.

Amaziningly, the Thai lady I had been emailing met me at the station. She was with her cousin... a local policeman who I think was there to look me over. You might remember that the lady was a little older... 53 and about to retire from her teaching job. I was OK with her but she had used a picture that was about ten years old so she was not as pretty as she once was... it is what is is.... She also would speak no English which she had told me she could speak basic English... Well I was there and off we went to the Mutmee Guesthouse. I got a private room with fans and a private bathroom with hot water shower and a little patio for 400 baht as I said I would stay ten days. Mutmee is a great place... a bit run down but the kitchen and patios are great and the food terrific and reasonable. Of course it is located on the banks of the Mekong...

After an hour of talk (the cousin spoke basic English), all was well and my room was ready... My lady friend without hesitation moved in with me and what comes naturally came naturally. I will say that later I discovered that she was very hopeful that something long term would come from this affair... I might have been receptive, but after a few days the language thing became a problem... sadly so. She was very domestic and treated me like a king yes as the days passed she became a bit more controlling. This did not effect her dressing me, tying my shoe, washing me in the shower and othe niceties... but as the days passed and we both knew it was not going anywhere she began to subtly spend my money... mostly I did not care but I could see that she had decided that if I was going home without a commitment she was not going to go without while I was in country...

We took some trips and finally at the end of two weeks I pulled the plug and gave her a tender hug with tears in our eyes... we said good bye and I caught the train to Bangkok. I had met a Canadian lady and she told me about a new hotel a couple of streets away from Khoa San Roan... so arriving at the train station I met up with a Aussie lady and her ten year old boy... we shared a Tut-tut to Khoa San and off I went to find the hotel. I got a exceptionally clean bare bones room with cable tv and a private bath with hot water shower for 400 baht and of course I was within walking distance of 'everything'... I fit in pretty fast and stayed a week. I met a lady from Switzerland who was on vacation and business from Koh Samui where she lived. We became companions and she invited me to return with her, which I did and I had a super time as she knew the whole deal...

Eventually I returned to Bangkok and then back to Florida arriving a couple of days ago. I have mixed emotions... in some ways I wish I had stayed, but I was not really ready for that yet... I miss it already and will go back for sure. I am sad that the lady in Nong Khai did not work out, but life goes on...

Again... thanks for the help and although I am not an expert... I have got my feet wet and all is well

Yes... I think you may be right. Thailand does have something special about it.

Btw... do you live in Thailand? I was thinking you are from 'down under' and visit from time to time...

I have been considering going to southern coastal China for my next trip but I cannot find anywhere near the information I did for my Thailand trip. I don't think it is as inexpensive as Thailand is either...

Well, I am working on the property and old singlewide mobile my daughter and I bought while I was gone. It will never replace my sailboat, but I cannot go back.

I had to re-read that three times to be sure you weren't calling your daughter old singlewide mobile. :o

...LOL

When I lost my sailboat and home to Hurricane Ivan in Grenada last September and I finally made my way back to the US with a duffle bag and my dog, which was all I had to my name, I bought a car and went on a 14,000 mile run-a-way trying to get my head straight and trying to find a place to live. I had thought about going to the Philippines (where I had once lived for three years) or Thailand or any Asian country. But I found myself in a little west coast redneck village called Homosassa or more acurately, Chassohowitzka. It is laidback, quiet and uncrowded. I found a old singlewide trailer that had been unlived in for a decade and made an offer on it and of course the half acre of land that backed up to a reserve.

While I was in Thailand, the deal closed and although I paid for it... I put it in my daughters name. I have an ex-wife that is a vicious, mean gringa woman who would love to find me and make trouble for me, so I try not to own anything nor do I like anyone to know where I am at... I use my daughters address for mail and government correspondence but otherwise I fly low and under the radar as much as possible. Works for me....

So... that should answer the question... I am not as quick as I once was... age is the thing you know...
