There is no way the TPA can possible be sufficient for the threat of violence and lawlessness down there in high season. The Thai police need to pull their fingers out and adopt a more professional and visible policing approach. It really needs it, and this isn't knocking the TPA.

I agree with you. I have been pushing for more Police Officers to be on duty on Walking Street every night, howveer there is simply not the manpower to do this. We are now starting to deal with more and more incidents involving violence and this is set to continue over the high season. We are prepared to an extent, but work under strict rules of engagement and can only go so far (in the presence of a Thai Police Officer of course!).

The OP is right, there is more anger out there on the streets this year from the tourists and the Thai's. Guess it has been a hard year for people, financially. Without sounding racist in any way, the Indian Tourists are causing a lot of problems as well. I guess we should call it a clash of culture and a misunderstanding of local cultures and traiditions.

I am not sure why there would be a shortage of police - there is from what Government sources would tell, more than 250,000 police in Thailand, on top of that there would probably be amount equal to that if not more volunteer police.

So that is 62,000,000 people / 500,000 police & volunteers = 1 police uniform for every 124 people in the nation - so where are they???

I remember a few years back, the Police Commander that is now at Banglamung Station - at the time he was just starting at Pattaya Station - made a speech where he insisted that all officers perform a full days work - from what was understood - they were clocking on for muster and then going off to run their family businesses and then back for clocking off - I had a laugh when I heard this - well done if they can get away with it - as I understand the rate of pay for a police officer is quiet low.

BTW Howard - keep up the good work.

As a whole it is my opinion that people in general are ruder and less well mannered then in the past.

Also, when most economies in the world are struggling. This brings out the worst in people.

Some countries in recent times have raised a generation of people, who simply think that it is all about themselves. They think they are simply entitled, that they should not have to work very hard, or put a lot of time into things, to get what they simply believe they just deserve. Because of the state of the world economies, increased competion for resources, they are now very angry.

Some countires in particular. I can speak best about the United States, have created a large group of people, who can only accurately be described as Parasitic in nature. They contribute little or nothing to the country. I am being kind in saying little, because the truth is that it is really nothing. In fact all they do is use up resources. They feel that they are deserving of a great deal of respect from every one else, but give little or none to others. They don't obey the law. They produce children who they then don't father. Their expectation is that other people should take responsibility for their actions, not themselves. They are simply sperm donors. In doing this they inrease and perpetuate their parasitic subculture. Their music reflects and glorifies all of their maladaptive behaviors. They now believe that all their maladaptive behavior is normal. In a world where their are more people, competition, with strained, and decreasing resources, they are becoming more angry. I wonder how much this is a world trend?

I love Pattaya. It is my chosen retirement location. I am a person who has earned other options for retirement. I choose Pattaya. However, I know that pattaya does not always attract the best people. Because, of the changes in the world and the hoi poloi that Pattaya attracts. I am not nieve and have not lead a sheltered life. Though I know, I don't know every thing, or have everthing figured out.

When people are intoxicated it often brings out the worst in many of them. In Pattaya you have a lot of intoxicated people from all over the world. They bring all their attitudes.

I will be staying in Jomtien from mid December till end of February. If I am in WS more than twice in that period it will be a lot. I always feel on high alert there.

You do not have to go to Thailand or Pattaya to find nasty bastards late at night. Plenty of them here in unholy Catholic Ireland. Dreadful lack of manners and common courtesy here also. :)

I am a Brit here and the reason I no longer hold doors open is cause I am pissed off by the ignorance of most of the other Farangs who just barge by you and scowl when you do try and be polite. Yes those ignoramuses include Arabs, Russians and Indians as well as all other nationalities.

..just wondering what keeps people living here under these less than ideal conditions.. pattaya seems to embody the worst aspects of this lovely country..

Ive been coming to Thailand for 10 years and youve just hit the nail on the head of what has changed ... a lot less people (Thai and Farang) alike just arent as laid back as what they used to be, thats what used to make the place somewhere i was always in a hurry to get back to. (only came to Pattaya for the first time about 4yrs ago though)

To be fair, though, this also includes a lot of Brits and other Europeans too.

It seems the custom of acknowledgement of a polite deed is dying out in UK too. Has been for a while.

That doesnt mean we all have to lead our lives to the level of the lowest common denominator :)

Penkoprod

I am a CANADIAN and I have been brought up with a sence of politnesse or respect for our older generatian or ladies( right or wrong) but a sense of respect. I hold the door open for a lady of any race and always try to be polite to many people but am very dissapointed because on many occasions am told or given the attitude that the politness I am trying to extend is not appreciated or wanted. As the Thais say -U p to You- As I say as a Canuck I respect age and wisom and if you dont like that--too bad--

Ya got to miss the old days,

When the biggest threat was being run over by aging Germans on big bikes wearing Kaiser helmets,

or the visual onslaught of speedo wearing Italians parading their junk down the beach,

and legendary cheap charlies haggling vendors to exhaustion,

Ya got to love them all or the town just wouldn't have any character.

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times,

it's all how you want to look at it :)

Without sounding racist in any way, the Indian Tourists are causing a lot of problems as well.

Could you please tell us more bad things about the Indians? :D

They will sacrifice (read kill in cold blood) 30 thousand live animals in a religious festival next month. It is expected that more than 1 million Indians will gather to enjoy the sacrifice :D Sorry that is 500 thousand and sacrifice 6 Nov.

hmmm... these Indians kill live animals? :) and that in cold blood? DISGUSTING BARBARIANS! they could have waited till the animals died of old age.

we non-Indians are cultured. in our countries millions of animals are killed each and every day. of course not in cold blood but always with the blessings of priests and appropriate last rites administered. then we eat these animals for breakfast, lunch and dinner from plates on dining tables in an orderly fashion because we cherish animals.

HAIL WESTERN CHRISTIAN CULTURE! let's teach them heathen orientals our proper life style.

very true - however, it is very rare that we have one million people turn out to witness the slaughter to bring us closer to our god :)
