My mother has just retired and is going to Thailand in this month and wants to stay for 5 months. What would be the most suitable type of Visa to apply for and/or border runs? She's from Sweden.

Thanks in advance.

Suggest your mother obtains a double entry tourist visa from embassy/consulate before travelling. That will give 60 day permission to stay on entry, which can be extended for a further 30 days at Thai immigration. Before expiry your mother will need to do border run to activate second 60 day entry and then extend permission to stay again at Thai immigration for further 30 days. In all that will give nearly 6 months stay. Extension fees are 1900 baht each time.

Have a look at the attached link. It looks like the embassy in Stockholm will only accept visa applications in person, whereas the consulate at Gothenburg will accept visa applications by post.

Based on the information you have provided it would be a double-entry tourist visa.

Arrive in Thailand: permission to stay for 60 days

Extension at local immigration office: 30 days

Border run: new permission to stay for 60 days

Extension at local immigration office: 30 days

ForrestGump, depending on your own circumstances and on your mother’s age she may be able to apply for a non-O visa and an annual extension of stay (although she will need only a little more than 60 days' extension). Look at paragraph 2.20(5) of Police Order 777/2551 and paragraph 2.20 of Immigration Bureau Order 305/2551.

Thanks a lot guys, I will forward the info to my mother.

I really appreciate this forum, I've got a lot of valuable help here (and hopefully also given some) on my own travels to Thailand, but that was a year ago and I figured the rules might have changed since then.

Tanaka: She will be 67 this month.

Cheers
