I have a valid 1 year work permit (based on employment with a Thai company). I also have a one year marriage visa.

As I am separated I will not get the marriage visa again but have to apply for one year based on work permit. What is the procedure and

how helpful is immigration in Chiangmai? Please advise

Not sure what/when you need to do. Do you have a multi entry non immigrant O visa or a one year extension of stay for Thai wife? If extension of stay when does it end?

I have one year extension of stay for Thai wife. Workpermit good until March 30, 2010. Visa good until May 2010 (not legally divorced yet, in process)

When the marriage ends, so does your permission to stay in Thailand. You would need to visit immigration the same day and ask for an extension of stay based on employment. If you need more time to prepare all the documents you can get a 7 day extension.

If the divorce doesn't come through before your current permission to stay ends, just do your next extension based on employment.

Based on employment would require an income of 50,000 baht a month for most Western Europeans, unless you are a teacher.

Not sure if divorce automatically ends your extension.

Ask at immigration to be sure, if it ends apply for extension based on employment.

Normally you'd need the following:

Your work permit.

Your tax/social security payments showing you earn 50,000 Baht/month or over (if you're European, different salaries for other nationalities can apply).

Audited bookkeeping of your employer for the last two years.

Updated company papers.

Social security payments for at least 4 Thais employed in the company you work for. They might need pictures of the staff at work, and they might drop in unexpected and check those staff are actually working there.

And the rest of the usual paperwork, i.e. your passport with copies, passport sized pictures etc...
