siamect
I live out in the boonies and the best Internet option for me is CAT EVDO. I'll wager that you have never tried to use the USB EVDO CCU-680 modem to connect.YES, there are solutions on the Internet but none of them work more than once. Windows connects when booted every time. ADDED - My Nokia is easily connected using Ubuntu. GSM is NOT EVDO. Not exactly but I have a DTAC Aircard which is about the same stuff... The problem is that they (your internet provider) are using a nasty M$ MSCHAPv2 protocol just to me mean to us... They even say on the package under system requirements "Not for penguins!" So what you are trying to do is really something that your internet provider does not support. It is like complaining that you diesel car does not run on pellets.... But we are clever so... Try sudo apt-get install network-manager-pptp pptp-linux resolvconf That will get you the MSCHAPv2 reboot and plug in your modem. After that you should be able to connect... and if you say it works once I bet you have problems with the DNS. After the connection is up, do: sudo su -c "echo 'nameserver 8.8.8.8'>/etc/resolv.conf" dirty, but it works every time. The file /etc/resolv.conf is recreated every time you get a new connection... If the server in the other end fail to give you a DNS server IP then the file /etc/resolv.conf is empty and you have no ip to your DNS. For me that happens often both in Win7 and in Gnu/Linux Cheers Martin

Thanks for trying to help. Aha sorry I'm running Kubuntu 9.10 karmic... It does not have the Gnome network manger (knetwork manager instead) Network manager in Gnome Ubuntu has probably the MSChapv2 already... and if you say it worked once then you probably have it installed. If you can connect then see if your /etc/resolv.conf is empty. If it is do sudo su -c "echo 'nameserver 8.8.8.8'>/etc/resolv.conf" and see if it works... Gary A
Martin, thanks for trying to help. I have bought and paid for Win 7 Pro for both my computers. It works great and the best part is that it runs everything I want to run without any fiddling. Linux is simply not worth the effort as far as I am concerned. phpbangkok
Ubuntu 10.4 is coming soon (end of April). it will contain many improvements. For usability, stability and speed. The beta looks really promising with 10sec boot time. Regarding /home on separate partition, you can set it up during installation at the disk partitioner, same as on every other distro. Generally there are not many relevant differences between different distros, its often only a point of view. Anyway they are coming closer together every day. regards Tibor
