A language school doesn't give a visa. Studying will make you elidgeble for a visa, It is the school you have to pay 21,000. For the visa you would pay seperatly. The requirement is that you study at least 4 hours a week on average and you would need to go to immigration every 90 day for a new extension of stay.

For more information, click on he banners of one of the language schools at the top of this page.

The moderator explained it well. Schools can’t sell you an Ed Visa, but if you study at a school approved by the Ministry of Education you can get an Ed Visa.

Every 3 months you need to visit immigration for your extension. But you don’t need to leave the country, other than when make your initial application, as this has to be lodged in person at a Thai Embassy (ie outside Thailand).

There are several forums relating to this topic on ThaiVisa. If you’re thinking of joining a school, I suggest you read through them as part of your ‘due diligence’ procedures.

I have a vested interest in plugging my own school - but believe this advice is sound: before you buy visit 2 or 3 schools, sit in on classes and talk to students.

Although a language school doesn't grant visas, they charge substantially more if you need a visa. If you don't need a visa - that is - you only want to learn Thai - the language school will charge you a lot less for language instruction.

Dunno where you studied thai (or even if you ever have :D ). ..

BUT I think you're confusing the yearly tuition with a thai class which runs several weeks or a month. Here in Bangkok most private thai language schools provide the paperwork from the Ministry of Education for free IF you pay for a year's tuition up front.

In fact (as I almost believed you knew what you were talking about :) ); I just called three very well known private thai language schools in Bangkok. All of them said they provide the paperwork for free (upon request) with a year's tuition paid up front.

Obviously if you don't need a visa there's no reason for the school to go thru the paperwork to get you that kind of documentation; which could be why it is offered 'upon request'. :D

It has been my observation; most private thai language schools are pretty dialed in to asking the students up front if they will need a visa when attending or not. :D

To answer your question about studying thai in Khon Kaen; Google it, there will be links to look around on for sure. Maybe one has something about a thai school up in that neck of the woods. Good Luck

In my experience, that is incorrect. To obtain MOE supported ED Visa, you need to prepay for 180 hours of study. Schools normally charge ED Visa student much less per hour then they do for those just purchasing say 20 hours of study.

How much will it cost at immigration for an Ed Visa? Is it the same as Non-imm visas?

I'd agree that the tuition is low-price and I don't agree that schools charge more for Ed Visa students. I studied Thai at UTL Asoke for 7000baht over 20 hours so 20,000baht for 180hours seems exceptionally low and, depending on the classes offered, quite reasonable.

For 7,000 baht I suppose you get private courses.

You can't compare that with class courses (maybe 6 people for 1 teacher) that are 2 ou 3 times less expensive.
