Kindle Question

I am not slamming anything. He said that he got these books for free and they are not free unless one downloads them illegally.

Maybe you are talking about my other posts on this thread, but they are two years old.

As far as my stores not having them, we are primarily a used book store - not a new book store with unlimited stock - so it is a little silly to make a comparison. I have never walked into any used bookstore anywhere expecting them to have all the most trendy titles available immediately. That is just not how used bookstores work.

Asia Books does carry some of these titles as they deal in new books which is a whole different thing.

not all free books are illegal! Guggenheim Foundation has free books. The following is from Guggenheim Foundation, nothing illegal about it.

Project Gutenberg offers over 36,000 free ebooks to download to your PC, Kindle, Android, iOS or other portable device. Choose between ePub, Kindle, HTML and simple text formats.

We carry high quality ebooks: All our ebooks were previously published by bona fide publishers. We digitized and diligently proofed them with the help of thousands of volunteers.

No fee or registration is required, but if you find Project Gutenberg useful, we kindly ask you to donate a small amount so we can buy and digitize more books. Other ways to help include digitizing more books, recording audio books, or reporting errors.

Over 100,000 free ebooks are available through our Partners, Affiliates and Resources.

Right - but these are books that the copyright has run out on and therefore very old. HOWEVER, I agree that there is much great literature on that site........but don't look for Tom Clancy. biggrin.gif

Yes, there are free books that are legal, but they are not usually new trendy ones. I would be very surprised to find Game of Thrones on Project Gutenberg.

As I said, my other posts on this thread are two years old and everything has changed. I still think that the popularity of e-books as they are now is mostly hype, but they will improve in the future and paper backs will probably eventually disappear as e-books cost nothing to produce and are much more profitable for publishers (when they are bought legally).

By the way, I would not have bothered answering ludditeman's post if he had not claimed that the e-books were free and asked me specifically how much they cost in my store in comparison.

I have removed a post suggesting/condoning illegal activity.

16) Not to post about gambling, betting, pornography, illegal drugs, fake goods/clothing etc and other activities that are officially illegal in Thailand.

Pls. note that you may be replying to old conversations as this is a two year old topic.

I have about 1000 unread novels on my Kindle at all times.

And you chose each one individually......or do you just read anything?

Commenting on frankafey reply #85 and this one plus Ludditeman's also

I would guess that few of us keep many books in there at any one time. I read so much I find that I can not remember a book by its title when I read many books by the same author. So I send them into archives at Amazon. They remain available to down load again at no cost and all I have to chose from is a list of maybe 5 books I have not read.

I might find one book less than I expected and, therefore, read parts of it and then switch to another book, and the return for a few more chapters, etc. But when I finish a book, I remove it.

My Kindle is keyed into Amazon by its internal ID. When I broke my old one and Amazon replaced it, they automatically de-registered my old one and registered my new one. My old one can no longer receive direct downloads, can no longer access my archives. So if someone else were to try to use it, there would be no books to read. They would have to register it with Amazon and start buying books/downloading under their own name.

So for frankafey, buying old e-readers might not give you access to the e-books; it might, but most likely would not.

I'm a bit of a thriller, SF, adventure and sometimes fantasy fan.

So when I find a new author I like, tend to load his works into my Kindle.

Very easy to reach 1,000 books, I have about 50 just from Clive Cussler

As for Gutenberg, I love the old Edgar Rice Burroughs books, Tarzan and the Mars series are all there for free.

At UG

I'm not entirely sure that selling second hand books is legal (according to the publishers licensing blurb)

Selling second hand music and movies is definitely not as it is strictly prohibited to redistribute, lend, etc.

In some areas of Thailand, playing music in public will get you arrested and fined.

Yes, I suppose different strokes for different folks and I can see your side.

Personally, I couldn't stand the thought of a 1000 books waiting to be read. I like to choose one or two that seem 'special' and concentrate on them and when I'm finished choose a couple more.

As I said different strokes for different folks and I will always be a conventional book reader as I love bookshops.

As for Project Gutenburg - I've read them all......really! biggrin.gif

Participating on an internet forum has little to do with reading for pleasure. I will read an article or two online or look for information, but I have several - yet unpublished - books that I would like to read, that friends have written, stored in my computer and I have never been able get past about 3 pages. Luckily it will not be too much longer before they come out in paperback.

I'm still on the fence as regards the paperback v e-reader debate .... but does the e-reader make it easier for a writer to get work published?

No need to invest in a print run and on-demand buying?

Yes, you can self publish with Amazon.

Project Gutenberg has over 36,000 books, to have read them all and assuming you have been reading for 60 years you would have had to read 1.64 books a day for 365 days a year for 60 years. You are certainly well read.B)

It was bloody hard work!!

Selling second hand music and movies is definitely not

Selling second-hand books is legal as long as they are not the ones with the covers removed and sent back to publisher as having been destroyed . My guess is that the same goes for CDs, DVDs and other materials as long as they are originals that were bought legally.

I'll wear a hoodie and sun's, the next time I browse in one of the zillions of used bookshops around the world. ph34r.gif

Even if the built-in cellphone is not able to receive service in CM, you can buy e-books online at Amazon, download to your computer, and then drag-and-drop to the kindle when it is plugged into the usb port.

The new Kindle definitely will not have wireless capability in Thailand. But this suggestion is correct. i do it all the time in Phuket. But evrything is charged to my USA credit card. This might be an issue for you.

i have a kindle here in chiang mai, it definitely DOES have wireless capability here. Amazon prepays for 3G, edge, gprs and wi-fi. Anywhere your phone will work, your kindle will work. I downloaded four free books from e-reader news last night. I love the kindle and i don't have to go downtown for paperbacks any more

I would guess Ramrod and I have the same model. And I, too, do not carry paperbacks or hardcovers anywhere any more.
