Community Ethiopian and Japanese Claim Victories at Pattaya Marathon 2025

Pattaya came alive over the weekend as more than 10,000 runners from across the globe converged for the “Amazing Thailand Pattaya Marathon 2025 Presented by MAMA.” The international race, held from 19–20 July, brought vibrancy, tourism and a festive atmosphere to the resort town, with athletes and spectators alike celebrating endurance, sportsmanship and cultural exchange. The race kicked off before dawn in front of Terminal 21 Pattaya shopping mall, with a high-energy opening ceremony graced by Pattaya Deputy Mayor Mr. Krisana Boonsawat and Mr. Nat Krutsut, Director of Events at the Tourism Authority of Thailand. The event’s spotlight races were the Full Marathon (42 kilometres) and the Half Marathon (21 kilometres), both of which drew professional runners from around the world. In the men’s marathon, Ethiopia reaffirmed its long-standing dominance in long-distance running. Tariku Abdi stormed to victory with a winning time of 2:25:03, securing the overall title. He was closely followed by compatriots Deraje Alemu Miko and Kindu Tiruneh, who took second and third place respectively, making it an all-Ethiopian podium sweep. Thailand’s pride in the men’s division was upheld by Mr. Charan Jupoh, who emerged as the top Thai finisher with a commendable time of 2:43:24. On the women’s side, Haruna Takano of Japan impressed with a powerful and consistent performance, clinching the overall title in 2:49:45. She finished well ahead of Ling Wu from China, who took second place and Ethiopia’s Yesheemebet Taso, who came in third. Thai runner Ms. Oranong Wongsorn led the local charge, finishing as the top Thai woman with a strong time of 2:56:17. Beyond the competition, the event served a greater purpose, promoting Thailand as a global hub for sports tourism and wellness. Organisers noted the marathon’s contribution to stimulating the local economy and energising Pattaya’s tourism sector during the mid-year period. With thousands of participants and an electric atmosphere along the scenic routes of Pattaya, the 2025 edition of the Pattaya Marathon proved once again to be more than just a race, it was a celebration of international camaraderie and the enduring spirit of athletic achievement. Accident Chinese Tourist Drowns in Rough Seas off Koh Lanta

A Chinese tourist drowned off the coast of Koh Lanta onthe afternoon of 20 July, after being swept out to sea by strong waves, despite warnings about dangerous sea conditions. The incident occurred at Ao Mai Phai (Bamboo Bay), located in Moo 5, Koh Lanta subdistrict, Krabi province. The victim, believed to be between 35 and 40 years old, had been on holiday with two friends and had entered the sea to swim despite rough conditions. Witnesses said the man was quickly overpowered by powerful waves and pulled away from the shore in front of his helpless friends, who remained on the beach and immediately alerted local authorities. Rescue efforts were launched by officials from Mu Ko Lanta National Park, the Royal Thai Navy (Koh Lanta Noi), the Tourist Police, local administrative officers and emergency responders. Boats were dispatched to search the area amid turbulent seas, and the body of the tourist was recovered shortly after. The deceased was brought ashore and transferred to Koh Lanta Hospital for formal identification and a post-mortem examination. According to officials, the incident took place within the jurisdiction of the national park, where warnings had already been issued about hazardous sea conditions due to seasonal winds. Authorities had repeatedly urged tourists to exercise caution or refrain from swimming altogether during this period. Despite these public safety announcements, the victim reportedly ignored the warnings, leading to the fatal incident. Park officials expressed their condolences and reminded all tourists to strictly follow safety advisories, especially during times of heightened weather risks.
