cdmtdm Posted January 18, 2010 Posted January 18, 2010 Hi Guys , deciding to go onto mobile internet connection , what is the best in value , speed and service that i can get connected asap ?? Cheers CdM
nam-thip Posted January 18, 2010 Posted January 18, 2010 Do you mean using your mobile phone to connect to the internet? Doing it that way the best speed you will achieve is 115kbps and once connected that speed will fall dramaticly. Invest in a USB device. I'm connected to the internet through TT&T but when i'm out and about and on the road in Thailand i take my SOLOMON EDGE modem with me. They now cost around 3000 baht and can acheive a connection speed of 460kbps with an average speed of 150kbps when on line. You can connect this type of modem using an AIS or Detac sim card. 50 hours costs around 200 baht. Surfing the Internet without Boundaries Check out the link. http://www.solomon.co.th The one of a kind Solomon USB EDGE Modem has a built-in USB interface, just simply plug it into any notebook or desktop computer and you will be able to get connected with the internet through the GSM network. tariq786 Posted January 18, 2010 Posted January 18, 2010 Hi Go for 3G if it is available in your area http://www.truemove.com/EN/05_service_3g.html Sierra wireless has nice collection of USB / PCMCIA cards.

cdmtdm Posted January 18, 2010 Author Posted January 18, 2010 Operating Systems: Window 2000/XP Home/XP ProAnd this is the problem ... I'd never buy something which is operating system dependent. thanks guys , great info , what would your suggestion be if this is a big problem?? and yes it is a USB type connection( not mobile phone) i want with good speed and reliability ... anyone using 3G ??if so comments please . Cheers
LivinLOS Posted January 19, 2010 Posted January 19, 2010 3g is currently 'experimental' licenses have not been issued and the 3g services are provided as a kind of bonus for normal data tarriffs is my understanding.. So you may get reception but dont expect much coverage. If you do have coverage its the best speeds and price going for mobile net. The next best speed is the CAT wireless system on CDMA, you need to buy the CAT equipment (was 12k, think I read this has come down) and is about 700 or so a month.. Expect about 1.5 Mbit downspeed but also reading CAT starting to overload the system (theres a few complaint threads in the tech section). The above poster who says you wont get edge through a mobile phone must have a steam powered phone.. Almost any modern mobile will do edge connections and can be tethered either with a cable or bluetooth to your laptop.. I do this when travelling and its not great, skype often breaks up, but it is workable for email and basic web browsing. If edge isnt around you fall back to GPRS which is pretty awful.
Peterocket Posted January 19, 2010 Posted January 19, 2010 I found that edge is usable in Phuket and reliable but just not particularly fast. Approx 120 kbps CAT on CDMA is perfectly usable in my opinion, speeds are pretty consistantly above 1.2 mbps which is probably better than certain ADSL connections in Phuket. MobieWave now do a good selection on Dongles and Routers incorporating CDMA
LivinLOS Posted January 19, 2010 Posted January 19, 2010 MobieWave now do a good selection on Dongles and Routers incorporating CDMA Yes but will CAT authorise thier use on the network ?? When there was a supply hickup a year or two back, and they had no dongles for sale from CAT, someone I know asked them about using his own CDMA equipment but they would not allow non CAT sold hardware onto the network.. I have no idea of thats changed or he just got a 'no cannot' type answer.

Cheers and thanks
Peterocket Posted January 20, 2010 Posted January 20, 2010 3G hasnt been rolled out yet in Phuket, my understanding is that it is currently being tested as we speak. CDMA is the best 'mobile' solution available.
krading Posted January 20, 2010 Posted January 20, 2010 Sorry, I'm a bit of a technophobe but I'm heading down to Samui next week and will be taking a note book / laptop. I've got a dtac simmed mobile phone and want to get internet for the note book for a couple of weeks just for emails etc. Is that GPRS or what?
Peterocket Posted January 20, 2010 Posted January 20, 2010 DTAC will provide you with the Edge network when you are roaming in most of Thailand. Should be perfectly fine in Samui.

LivinLOS Posted January 21, 2010 Posted January 21, 2010 As 3G is new I would love to hear your reports on it.. Who did you end up as the provider ?? (True ??) What is the per month unlimited ?? What is the local and international speed reports as per www.speedtest.net This is such a new service we dont have a lot of real world data yet.. Thanks
ScubaBuddha Posted January 22, 2010 Posted January 22, 2010 When I travel around Thailand I have found that I have been able to find free Wifi signals fairly easily. A wireless connection would be convenient, but I am not sure it's worth the money.
