Puffer Meal Kills Ice-cream Vendor

Featured Replies

An ice-cream vendor died after eating puffer fish at midnight on Dec. 24 in his home in Bophut. His wife and five-year-old daughter, who also partook of the deadly dinner, were in serious condition at the Thai International Hospital.

Dusorn Anumart, 57, bought the puffer fish, known for its potent nerve poison, at a market on the island. In some countries, particularly Japan, puffer fish is a specialty. But it requires special skills to remove the poison from the fish to make it safe to eat.

you shouldn't eat what you don't know...

Puffers are consumed in Japan as a delicacy however prepared by a licensed chef. There are reports even in Japan of

deaths from Puffers prepared by licensed chefs - so you have to be extremely careful of this cuisine preparation.

The poisonous part of the puffer is the mainly their organs and this needs to be removed totally with caution. Usually

the carefully cut fillet part is consumed.

I've once seen on a National Geo type show which featured 'Black magic' rituals performed in Jamaica (I think it was Jamaica), however the cult will administer a tiny bit of puffer poison which will paralyze you and bury you alive and then

exhume you from the pit days after as a Zombie,...scary stuff.

Huge in Japan. They actually discovered how to breed a puffer fish that doesn't have the poison and no one would buy it - extraordinary!

Sad story though.

How very sad for this family.

Is this fish really so delicious that it's worth taking the risk?

actually it is not.

it is quite tough and as a result is served as thin shavings to compensate.

much like sharkfin which is essentially flavourless

Wasn't there a Thread recently on here that mentioned hundreds or thousands of Puffers washed up on Ban Rak Beach ??

Coincidence ??
