DJ Pat Posted May 3, 2005 Posted May 3, 2005 Just wanna know what your preferences are. I know it also depends on your location. Have I left any supermarkets out?
Totster Posted May 3, 2005 Posted May 3, 2005 I've only ever visited Tesco Lotus, Makro and Big C.... Tesco was my favorite.. totster
DJ Pat Posted May 3, 2005 Author Posted May 3, 2005 If it was a Premier League of supermarkets, Foodland would be the Chelsea of the bunch (this season anyway)
Totster Posted May 3, 2005 Posted May 3, 2005 If it was a Premier League of supermarkets, Foodland would be the Chelsea of the bunch (this season anyway) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> For what reasons.... ? What makes them the best..? totster
DJ Pat Posted May 3, 2005 Author Posted May 3, 2005 Selection, baked beans from NZ, Took la dee food outlets, Imported selections, english sausages etc etc etc
Popeyethesailorman Posted May 3, 2005 Posted May 3, 2005 My favorite supermarket for food would have to be the Rim Ping Supermarkets in Chiang Mai. Lot's of imported stuff but a little spendy. They even have Marmite for the Brits.
bkkmadness Posted May 3, 2005 Posted May 3, 2005 The sausages are ropey in foodlands, give me villa market food anyday. Beats foodlands half arsed selection hands down. But I voted carrefour coz I use it most and economically the best choice was decent food.
SBACM Posted May 4, 2005 Posted May 4, 2005 I second the vote for Rimping(Chiang mai) by far the best farang supermarket in Thailand My favorite supermarket for food would have to be the Rim Ping Supermarkets in Chiang Mai. Lot's of imported stuff but a little spendy. They even have Marmite for the Brits. <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
taxexile Posted May 4, 2005 Posted May 4, 2005 in bangkok it would have to be tesco at rama 4 , good selection of everything and the fresh produce is of a good quality. love it there. in samui tesco is a sorry apology for a supermarket with a poor selection of foodstuff and the fresh fruit and veg. are just disgusting considering what is on offer at the local thai markets. for miserable offhand service without a smile the staff there are the equal of those at their uk outlets. hopefully big c or carrefour will open here and offer some healthy competition. nothing really beats shopping in the local markets , especially once your face is known by the vendor and you know she is giving you good stuff for a fair price. but with more and more supermarkets opening everywhere the days of markets in every village and small town are sadly numbered. tescos etc. have changed the face of british high streets within the past 15 years and i'm sure they will do it here.
Jai Dee Posted May 4, 2005 Posted May 4, 2005 I regularly shop at Carrefour, Tops, Foodland, Big C, & Tesco Lotus... they supply all my local food stuffs... but my favourite supermarket for variety and quality of imported food and wine is the Villa Supermarket near Soi 33 in BKK. A trip to Villa is on the agenda for every trip I make to the big smoke. withnail Posted May 4, 2005 Posted May 4, 2005 My local supermarket is Tops which is not excellent but much better than the Food Lion that was there before. However I have voted for Villa for their sausages alone even though I rarely bother to go down there.
davethailand Posted May 4, 2005 Posted May 4, 2005 Friendship I buy normal everyday stuff, I'm not bothered about imported british stuff.
Nordlys Posted May 4, 2005 Posted May 4, 2005 Have I left any supermarkets out? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Fuji Super 1 & 2 on Sukhumvit, super market in Emporium and Isetan dept. store are me and my wife's favorites. Fresh and cheap veggies, according to my wife.
Rinrada Posted May 4, 2005 Posted May 4, 2005 Thai-Tops....Blighty-Morrisons with fish and chips for breakies on sunday mornings
Rhys Posted May 4, 2005 Posted May 4, 2005 Long Live Villa.. For the Dairy Queen next door, Coffee up the street.. and the P-Tang around the corner.
withnail Posted May 4, 2005 Posted May 4, 2005 FoodLion died some 9 months ago! <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Yes because it was terrible. I used to walk round the place for about an hour before I realised that despite all the shelves being full there wasn't actually anything that if combined together could be classed as a meal. If you understand what I mean.
yeti Posted May 4, 2005 Posted May 4, 2005 Carrefour Rama IV for french imports and "french food" made in Thailand.
lampard10 Posted May 4, 2005 Posted May 4, 2005 I've had to vote for Foodland cause you forgot Friendship & Matthews shop in Buriram
thaiflyer1 Posted May 4, 2005 Posted May 4, 2005 Selection, baked beans from NZ, Took la dee food outlets, Imported selections, english sausages etc etc etc Try the Ayam brand baked beans if you see them, not bad at all and only 26 baht a big tin. Carrefour (Pattaya) for the sheer range of local and imported products.......but the checkout staff leave a lot to be desired. For a mix of decent products coupled with efficient checkout staff and ease of parking then Foodland or Friendship win.
DJ Pat Posted May 4, 2005 Author Posted May 4, 2005 Try the Ayam brand baked beans if you see them, not bad at all and only 26 baht a big tin. Precisely why I am now eating the SPC Brand from NZ that's available at 62 Baht a can. Ayam's were awful.
tutsiwarrior Posted May 4, 2005 Posted May 4, 2005 tescos in Suphanburi...great food hall (but the selection of stuff on the shelves pretty much stinks)
DJ Pat Posted May 4, 2005 Author Posted May 4, 2005 When I was in Hong Kong I bought Heinz beans imported from the UK then imported them myself to Thailand. Genuis!!
thaiflyer1 Posted May 4, 2005 Posted May 4, 2005 When I was in Hong Kong I bought Heinz beans imported from the UK then imported them myself to Thailand. Genuis!! I bought a tin of Heinz when i was on a visa run down in Penang didnt like them at all, defintely different from the ones back in the UK. I dont mind the Ayam ones the sauce is sweet same as Heinz and the beans at least aren't as hard as bullets..........Tried the SPC ones there ok as well. Edit......just checked the tin of Heinz from Penang (brought 4 tins back with me) they are made in NZ of all places.....go figure eh!

I think Tim,one of our customers bought some for a BKK restaurant. I prefer Ayam funnily enough. I never used to eat BB's till I tried them here. Most people say they're too sweet though.
Kan Win Posted May 4, 2005 Posted May 4, 2005 Deli Market, Second Road, Patong, Phuket. Great for one and all. Friendship & Foodland, Pattaya. Rim Ping Chaing Mai ( now, me think they have 3 branches there, Tantapan that is) Emporium, Foodland, Tops in BKK. Lotus in Kanchanaburi same as "tutsiwarrior" mentioned in Suphanburi (great food hall (but the selection of stuff on the shelves pretty much stinks)). Did not forget Koh Samui. Lots of small places but, nothing to shout home about. Have a feast wherever you are in Thailand. Happy Shopping and you Kan Win
Boon Mee Posted May 8, 2005 Posted May 8, 2005 TescoLotus in Suphan City. Great foodhall with lots of good-lookin' eye-candy. Good liquor section too.
lampard10 Posted May 8, 2005 Posted May 8, 2005 th lots of good-lookin' eye-candy. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Wow...that's unusual for Thailand
