I went in there tonight with a torn muscle (playing football). Checked at reception that my insurance would cover it, and they confirmed it would be classes as an accident and covered. To cut a long story short, on receiving the bill was told that it cannot be classed as an accident and only covered with outpatient (1500 max cover), bill was 4000. There reasoning was that as i didn't fall down and there was no blood then in Thailand it is not covered (go figure). When i questioned this, they said that they would verify with the insurance company in the morning and if they ok it then money returned.

Anyone any knowledge regarding how appropriate there stance was? My dismay in this is that i had the forethought to check the position with payment before i proceeded and still got shafted. Also, how can it not be an accident?

Oh, and waiting 30 minutes to see a doctor didn't enamour me to the place either. Choose your health carers wisely folks!

One last gripe - I was quoted 3,200 for crutches :) ( 200bht in Central)

Needless to say both crutches and all prescribed medications are still in the hospital waiting for the next.....er, mmmm patient :D

First of all I have no idea what bnh is, and what medical insurance company do you use?

Barry

BNH is suppossedly one of the top International Hospitals IN BKK.

Insurance Co. is Ayudhya Allianz (though no blame on them as their office was not open at the time, therefore a BNH decision).

Thanks,

Bangkok Nursing Hospital (formally called Bangkok Nursing Home) and a very old expat private hospital who have always attracted the top government specialists for part time work. Believe they now come under the wings of Bangkok Hospital Group and are priced at top tier.

I would question an insurance company that can not be contacted except during office hours however.

Valid point Lop, though doesn't really address the issues raised with the hospital.

I think the "acid test" will be what the insurance company says, and thai insurance companies are not always very rational in their decisions. If they actually take the "no blood, no accident" line then BNH was in fact acting on their knowledge/experience of how local insurance companies tend to interpret things. If not, then BNH made a poor decision based on the staff person in question being inadequately trained.

As for the meds and the crutches, drugs and medical equipment/supplies are always much, much costlier in these hospitals and one shoudl always buy them outside if at all possible.
