does an open ended return or onward ticket(paid for but seat not confirmed for departure) count when entering thailand on visa exempt status(without a tourist visa)?

I emailed my local thai embassy this question and after a week they replied without answering my question. Actually, their reply not only did not answer my direct question, they gave me some wrong information about something i didn't even ask about.(their email stated americans can only recieve 15 days visa expemt status flying in, but provided a link that when clicked on clearly stated 30 days by air, 15 by land!

another question... if thailand immigration or the airlines won't let you on the plane without an onward/return ticket without a visa, then how can malaysia airlines promote these in one country/out another country plane tickets? like they'd sell me a ticket that flys into bangkok and flys out of vietnam, but then wouldn't let me on the plane because i don't have a ticket out of thailand?

and before anyone responds 'why don't you just get a tourist visa, they're free!'

1. they are not free at all thai embassies around the world. it seems that each embassy can make up their own rules as they go along.

2. for some people the expense of getting to a thai embassy could be as much as the ticket to thailand. i would have to take a bus or train the night before and stay at a hotel to be able to drop it off by noon the next day at the thai embassy nearest to me, then repeat this process when i go to pick it up.

3. my wife is korean, so she gets 90 days visa exempt status flying in at no cost. am i to understand that if she has an open ended return ticket or in one country/out another ticket she would need a visa? a visa that would give her LESS time in thailand than she would get on visa exempt status?

Check with the airline first, by email (so you have it in writing). They are the ones who check the requirement.

Check if you can otherwise change the departure date from Thailand without cost and just confirm a date within 30 days of your arrival to Thailand and change after you arrive in Thailand to another date. See the conditions of your ticket for this.

Many consulates allow for applying by mail for a visa.
