February 8, 201016 yr I was hoping someone can help. I'll be traveling to Thailand soon & was hoping someone may be able to confirm the availability of a Chinese Herb I use. Is Huang Lian (Rhizoma Coptidis) available in Thailand? It's the tablet form I'm interested with. http://www.orientalpharmacy.com/hulisutak.html I don't like carrying anything that vaguely looks like an illicit drug when passing through customs.
February 9, 201016 yr There are lots of chinese herbal pharmacies in Thailand, especially in the Chinatown area of BKK. Problem will be communication. If you can, get this written out in Chinese in which case I think your chances are pretty good. certainly these shops seem to carry a huge variety of herbal remedies. There is also a Chinese medicine clinic in Saint Louis Hiospital (www.saintlouis.or.th), you could try calling them to ask if they carry it. (You can try emailing too but don't be surprised if no answer, they aren't very good at responding to emails in English).
February 15, 201016 yr Author Thanks Sheryl. I won't be able to go without Huang Lian when I travel so I'm considering bringing it into the country. Do you think I'll have problems with customs? Should I declare it? This is what the packet looks like. http://www.orientalpharmacy.com/hulisutak.html
February 16, 201016 yr As long as it is in the original packaging I don't think you'll have any problem unless you are bringing in such a large quantity that they think it is for retail purposes in which case import licenses, work permit etc become issues. A Chinese herb for personal use should not be of concern. If inside it is not a blister pack but loose tablets then to be on the extra safe side (avoid suspicion that it's not what it is labelled as) bring in only sealed unopened bottles. There is no place on the customs form for declaration of medications and I don't think any need to declare it.
