wineman Posted February 9, 2010 Posted February 9, 2010 I am English and have a Thai driving licence. I want to get an IDP here in Thailand for when I go to England this year for a month . I am told I need a work permit to get one. Is that true please? My UK licence has expired.
Soutpeel Posted February 9, 2010 Posted February 9, 2010 No its not true that you need a WP, got a IDP based on my Thai DL end of Nov 2009 You need a 5 year Thai DL license, some photos and copies of the relevant pages of your P/P. If you have a 1 year license you will not get the IDP
bonobo Posted February 9, 2010 Posted February 9, 2010 A Thai driver's license is valid for driving in the US. I am not sure if it is for the UK, though. In all my travels, the only time I have ever needed an International Driving Permit was to rent a car in Korea.
true blue Posted February 9, 2010 Posted February 9, 2010 have you tried renewing your uk licence,on line???
7by7 Posted February 9, 2010 Posted February 9, 2010 You do not need an IDP for the UK; providing it's a full 5 year one your Thai licence will be valid for driving in the UK for up to 12 months on each visit. True blue, you can't renew a UK licence on line as you have to send them a new photo. See Renewing the photo on your driving licence. Unless the licence has expired because the holder is over 70, see Renewing your driving licence at 70 plus.

I am over 70 and my UK driving licence was expired...had no trouble in renewing it online, but did have to use a UK address for its return, which was then posted on to me.
hearditallbefore Posted February 9, 2010 Posted February 9, 2010 As has been said before, an IDL is NOTHING more than your own driving license translated to English. If your license in Thailand is valid, it is valid as well abroad for whatever time is determined by that country, exactly as the translated IDL.

Thanks Gennisis, Can you point me in the right direction for renewing my UK driving licence online please? Mine has expired, I am over 70 too. Did you not have to supply a new photo? Apologies for late response but have been without a PC.
