Went to renew my Thai Driving Licence yesterday from 1 year to 5 year. Had to get a certified letter from police with my wife stating proof of residence, "same procedure as last year" only this time the police decide they want to take my finger prints. Is that standard procedure now..? What will it be next time, a lock of hair, a nail clipping....? or maybe implant a micro cctv in my forehead..? lol

you get finger-printed for your drivers license in the US so I deem this should not really be

a big deal unless there is a criminal or warrant against you?

No Criminal warrants against me just feel a slight apprehensive knowing Thai police have your finger prints. I suppose it will make identifying the body easier if I run out of money and decide to do a Pattaya balcony dive..! lol

The finger printing actually has nothing to do with the driving license. It is to do with the residency letter.

Don't forget that farangs are supposed to report to the authorities once a year and carry passports at all times.

Who does that?

Indeed the finger prints are a way for identification if you should come a cropper.

I got my license in June last year and the police told me to keep the residency letter with my passport as Immigration may start asking to see it at extension of stay time.

Sorry, I forgot. What do you mean by that?

I do a yearly extension plus address reports every 90 days.

What is it you would think I'm missing?

There has been a "rule" for a long time that Farangs who do not have the yellow house registration need to report to the local authorities once a year.

This is because you will not be on the Thai house registration book. Usually the local Tambon Office will do a consensus of how many people live in their catchment area once a year. So the Thai population have to photocopy their house books and take it to the office.

I renewed my Thai drivers license from 1-5 years back in November. I just show my WP which is proof of where I live, but no finger printing happening. News to me.

Where do you get that? I've had an drivers license in America, for 40 years. Never once have I been finger printed. My state does use facial recognition software now, but even it's fairly new.

Just went to Immigration today for my residence certificate for drivers license, all the usual paperwork (passport, proof of residence) but no fingerprint.

Maybe they don't like your looks :)
