Thailand Moves to Legalise Poker as a Sport
Picture courtesy of natural8 In a bold move, Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai has signed an order to revoke the ban on poker, aiming to propel Thailand into the arena of international sporting events. The announcement, as revealed by Thai Rath, represents a major change, but fine details still need crafting. The government's decision indicates a willingness to embrace poker as a skill-based sport, aligning with global perceptions. Phumtham emphasised that while the decision is a delicate matter, the Council of State must meticulously review the steps to ensure propriety. Adjustments may be necessary to hold poker events, with a fresh look at existing regulations. One such law is the antiquated Playing Cards Act of 1943, which limits possession and importation of unregistered playing cards. Originally intended to curb idleness during wartime, this act now appears outdated as the nation reconsiders its stance, according to a report by Thai Newsroom. As poker gains recognition worldwide, Phumtham believes Thailand must not lag. With the signed order, there's urgency to legalise poker, although initial competitions might require a case-by-case approach. A dedicated committee will study the necessary legislative amendments to make this transition smooth. Phumtham also annulled the Interior Ministry Order No. 490/2501 from 1958, which stipulated the conditions for card games aligned with the Gambling Act of 1935. This move redefines the legal landscape for gambling in Thailand, where officially allowed activities are limited to the state lottery and horse racing. In summary, Thailand's lifting of the poker ban represents a strategic shift toward recognising poker as a legitimate sport. However, the path requires careful legislative navigation to ensure that competitions can be conducted within the law. The future promises potential for international events, aligning Thailand with global poker standards. Adapted by ASEAN Now from Thai Newsroom 2025-08-05 -

Accident Man Dies in Motorbike Crash Returning from Birthday Celebration
Picture courtesy of Kaoded. A 22-year-old man died after losing control of his motorcycle and crashing into a pillar beneath the Chang Erawan BTS station on Sukhumvit Road. His friend, who was riding as a passenger, was seriously injured in the crash. Police from Samut Prakan City Station received the report at around 00:30 am on 4 August. Rescue teams from Samut Prakan Hospital, Ruamkuson Foundation and local rescue associations rushed to the scene under the BTS Chang Erawan station in Bang Mueang subdistrict, Mueang district. At the crash site on the central reservation beneath the elevated railway, officers found the passenger, Mr Disathon Khoiyui, 22, lying on his back with both arms broken and multiple abrasions. He was given first aid and rushed to Samrong Medical Hospital. Nearby lay the driver, Mr Norasing Chancho, also 22, deceased. His body was found with severe injuries including a broken neck, multiple fractures in arms and legs and bleeding from the ears, nose and mouth. His legs were resting against a raised concrete edge beside the pillar. Approximately 20 metres away stood their damaged black Honda Wave motorbike, licence plate from Bangkok, with a badly smashed front end. Relatives and friends who arrived shortly after the crash said the deceased had just celebrated his birthday the previous day (3 August) and was returning home when the crash happened. Mr Nat, 21, a friend of the deceased, said the birthday party had taken place at his house. The victim had not drunk much and decided to leave with another friend. Although Nat did not witness the crash, he heard that the motorbike hit the kerb on the central reservation. Another witness, Mr Palm, 21, who saw the crash, said the driver lost control after hitting the kerb, then collided with a barrier, which threw him across to the opposite side of the road. He said the victim was the driver, while the seriously injured man was the passenger. A nearby resident, described hearing a loud crash and rushing to find two men lying near the pillar. He saw the passenger seriously injured and the driver struggling for consciousness while coughing up blood. Authorities have documented the scene and are reviewing nearby CCTV footage to determine the cause of the crash. The body of the deceased has been transferred to the forensic institute at Ramathibodi Hospital for autopsy before being released to the family for funeral arrangements. Report Global Luxury Shift: Bangkok Now Top 11 for High-End Living
The emphasis is on New Wealthy Individuals. I was in Central Embassy and the shoppers I saw there were Thai . A few other Asians. Thais with money will buy in Bangkok , but foreign wealthy will not., they have it all at home and in nearby countries. Also there a limit of stock they can have on hand, sizes , colors . The foreign rich aren’t flocking to Bangkok. There’s nothing there for them. They’re used to California, Monaco, Cannes , Nice, Paris, where the hotel Palaces are and the world s famous chefs. Where they can dock their yachts and buy all the supplies locally. Or invest in wine country land houses like Clooney and Brad Pit, and have the fully qualified staff that they need to look after everything. Bangkok will never have that, could never give them what they need. Just the air pollution would frighten them away, no money can alter that. -

Military RTAF to Commission 8 AT-6 Light Attack Aircraft
Textron employee here. The Texan II is an excellent fit for any Cambodian missions. Plenty of rockets in those pods to deter further encroachment of the border, and deal with any artillery in those areas.
