I was a bit troubled by Tod's notion that people who have higher education have better grammar.

We are talking about native speaker here.

Mental grammar is the grammar that natives acquired naturally during childhood.

Stylistic grammar is the grammar taught in school and is culturally considered by some as a better form.

It is built upon mental grammar and hence restricted form of mental grammar.

There are a few cases that stupid scholar making it go against each other.

Linguistically (or scientifically) speaking neither form is considered better. Stylistic grammar would probably be considered artificial in this realm.

For an adult, rewiring their brain to grammar of a foreign language is difficult. To have the same level of metal grammar as a native is unreachable goal to many.

Edward Sapir wrote, "When it comes to linguistic form, Plato walks

with the Macedonian swineherd, Confucius with the head-hunting

savage of Assam."
