Sukhumvit 101, Sri Nakarin Area

Hi. I'm looking for a house to rent and found a few in my price range in the Sukhumvit 101, Sri Nakarin area. Any comments on what the area is like? I know it's the suburbs (or something like it). I don't want to live in Bangkok center and I want a house, not an apartment, so I'm looking at gated/private communities as an alternative (we're a family with pets, so this makes sense). Anybody knows the area and can comment on how it looks, safety, cleanliness, public transportation (although I know it's close to nonexistent) or taxi access? Any help would be appreciated.

I live on 101/1 which is a few blocks down from you. Lots of shopping around with Carfour and Lotus near the On Nut Station. There is a red bus that goes from 101/1 to the On Nut station but I usually take a motorcycle taxi for 40 Baht. If they ever open the skytrain extension it would make things a lot easier. My area is certainly a very Thai area with little to no farang businesses or restaurants.

I know this area.

Suk soi 101 (Punna Withi) is a dead end, it doesnt go all the way to Sri Nakarin rd, you would have to go to soi 101/1 or soi 103 to get to Sri Nakarin rd.

You say you have found a place to rent, if you found it on the internet you will be paying over the odds, a drive round the area and you will find plenty of houses with for rent signs.

You also havent said your price range.

Is your wife Thai, or can you speak and read Thai?

Reason for asking is this makes it easier for you.

Its not usually the first area of choice for most who move here, what attracts you to the area?

Schools for children or close to your work?

Unless I know the whereabouts in the area you are refering to I cant comment on safety or security etc.

The reason is, its just a normal Thai area, which means you can be living in a gated community right next door to a run down area, karaoke bars etc.

Another overlooked problem is flooding in the rainy season.

Public transport is plentiful as are taxis.

As mentioned by another poster, this is a Thai area, so if you are looking for farang bars and restaurants, forget it.

Thats not to say its unsafe or not farang friendly, I have never heard of farangs having problems in this area, providing you bear in mind you are in Thailand you shouldnt have any problems.

Bang Na just down the road may well be another option.

I have lived on Soi 101 for 8 years and am still there. There is no longer any flooding on the main soi, but some of the sub sois flood. Later this year or early next year the BTS station at the mouth of the soi is supposed to be going into operation so that will be convenient. Having said that, 101 is a quite narrow soi and the traffic sometimes really backs up, especially when there are celebrations/funerals etc. being held at the temple Wat Thamongkol. Traffic is sometimes a real pain in the morning. There are loads of motorcycle queues and it is only 20 Baht to the end of the soi, less if you don't go down so far. There is also a songtaew soi truck bus which charges 6 Baht.

More recently, they have put up signs opposite the soi leading to the temple to warn about bag snatchers. Having said that, in all my time there I have not had any trouble whatsoever apart from my mountain bike being stolen. But then I do not live in a gated community and should have brought it in instead of chaining it up outside.

There is a flea market held twice a week in the evenings, there are two or three veterinary clinics (one of which I will be visiting on my way home), a dentist (I have never used), no clinics but a number of drug stores, a number of 7-11s and a Tesco Minimart.

Personally, I like the place because it is quiet but not too quiet and at the same time convenient with the numerous shortcuts to Central Bang Na and Seacon.

Thanks for the replies. We're both expats, English speakers only. One of the main reasons we picked the area is because prices seemed to be much lower than in other suburban areas. We've been looking for houses on this website: ---- (For some reason I'm not able to post a complete URL. I'll be happy to send it by pm or please let me know how to insert it here. I'm thinking I'm not allowed to post URL's because my account is new). We're looking for a house under 25,000. If any of you can take a look at the site and suggest a better area within that price range, I'd really appreciate it. The houses listed have neighborhoods as well, so if you could point me to which ones are best, then I can focus on that area. Both my husband and I are freelance writers, so we work from home. Technically, we can live anywhere. A gated community that is mixed (rather than an all-Thai area) or mostly expat would be ideal, since we don't speak Thai and it would be nice to be able to communicate (please don't take that the wrong way; I don't mean anything except that it would be nice to have some expats around). Clean, safe, no floods. We need a fenced-in yard so the dogs can play. We don't need luxury (and probably wouldn't be able to get it for 25,000) but I also don't want to live next to a run-down area. A western-like house would be ideal. Need reliable ASDL internet connection for work. So any help and suggestions would be appreciated, especially regarding best areas to live in. Thanks so much.
