I did some checking here but didn't find any recent information regarding going to China from either Chiang Kong or Chiang Saen.

I don't want to go by air.

I did see a thread about going to Chiang Kong taking the bus from Huay Xai, Laos to China.

I also saw an another thread for a boat from Chiang Saen to Jinghong.

Although I am flexible, I prefer not going to Laos this time around.

Can anyone provide recent contact, schedule and pricing information.

Thanks

a well establish local resident in Chiang Rai told me that a ferry will take you up into China (Yunan) province from

Chiang Saeng river dock near the immigration outpost, but unsure what kind of schedule they have.

Gins Travel in Chiang Saen also can book the boat for you and provide help with getting passport in the day before. They also can help with you going thru Laos if need be. I was suppose to go on boat last week however the boat was canceled due to low water. So went thru Laos instead. Boat is around Y800 one way with Laos trip less than 1/2 that depending on if you have to get visa to enter Laos.

I plan to leave about the 2nd week of March. It sounds like I may have a problem if the water level is too low. I was going to take the boat to avoid paying for a Laos visa. If I have to get one, then I may as well go to China by bus from Huay Xai.

I was confused by your answer. Did you go to thru Laos by bus or boat? If you went by bus, can you give me details?

You can call Chiang Saen Tour and travel @081-993-2425 tp get info about the boat. I took the boat from Chiang Saen to Xishuangbanna the end of January. The cost was3500 baht. It left at about 5:00am. Because of the river level was so low it had to stop about 2.5 hours from Xishuangbnna. Then take a bus the rest of the way to Xishuangbanna. It was a nice boat ride.

Unless you want to walk on the rocks in the river all boat traffic up and down river has been canceled. i suggest you find another way to China.

I came to " go by bus" conclusion last month. In fact, I was planning to go to Chiang Kong by bus this morning but something came up last night so I will be crossing the Laos border Sunday to catch a Monday morning bus to China.

I am assuming the border is open 7 days a week.

Anyone know if there is a bus leaving Huay Xai for Jinghong and if yes, what time and days does it leave. I know about the bus to Mengla which leaves Mon Wed Fri at 8:30AM.

Buses leave Huay Xai to Luang Namtha at 9:30AM, 11:00AM, and 1:00PM. Change there.

Minivans near Laos Immigration go to the Boten casino in the AM.

Thanks I know. I wanted know if there was a direct bus from Huay Xai to Jinghong. I also know that I can catch a bus in Mengla to Jinghong.

I actually was going to leave yesterday but do to an unforeseen event, I delayed the trip until this Sunday so on Monday I guess I'll know the answer.
