Star system to shed light on hotel quality

BANGKOK: -- A leading tourism foundation has lent its support to the introduction of a star system of quality standards to the hotel industry, expressing confidence that the internationally-recognised system would help boost the confidence of foreign visitors.

Still in its infancy, the system which gives hotels a 1-5 star rating is becoming increasingly popular among hoteliers, with 57 requesting star certification so far this year, compared to 84 in 2004.

Mr. Chanin Thonwanik, President of the Foundation for the Development of Standards and Personnel in the Service and Tourism Industry, notes that the star system enables hotels to demonstrate their level of service and build up a reputation for themselves.

With the government keen to cement Thailand's position as a regional tourism hub, with 13.38 million foreign visitors this year, the star system is seen as important to ensure that visitors are assured of internationally recognised quality standards.

"This is a good opportunity for hotels to upgrade their services in line with quality standards", Mr. Chanin said.

Noting that only 17 percent of hotels registered with the Thai Hotels Association had requested star certification, he called on the nation's remaining hotels to enter into the scheme.

From 84 to 57 is "increasingly popular"? The logic escapes me.

84 in 12 months, 57 in 5 months, it looks to me as "increasingly popular" :o

Guess it depends on how you read it. My read was that 57 properties requested star rate this year but last year 84 did so. You read as 57 (new) requests were received already to add to the 84 from last year. You are probably right; but as so often the case it could have been written much better.
