I'm currently on an ED Visa from a Thai language school and will soon be attending a two year program at a Thai University, which will grant me an ED Visa during this time. I wont have time to keep attending my language classes so I'd like to 'switch' the institution granting me my visa - and I'd really like to do so without having to leave the country.

I asked immigration about this last time I renewed my visa and they said it was possible and that I needed to go to my language school first and have them cancel my visa. I would then go to immigration with the paperwork from the University.

The person I spoke to at immigration was light on the details and just nodded and said yes a bunch of times. It doesn't really make sense to me because if my language school cancel's my visa - wont I be in the country illegally at that moment? Wouldn't I then need to leave Thailand immediately and take the paperwork from the University with me and have a new ED visa issued at a foreign Thai embassy?

With my remaining extensions I have another 8 months left on my original visa and I'll have the paperwork for my new visa within two months, so plenty of overlap, I wont be stranded without a visa at any point. I'm just concerned I'll be forcing myself to leave the country by having my language school cancel my current visa.

Thank in advance!

They don't have to cancel your visa. They ( language school ) need to issue you a letter stating that you no longer study with them, and together with the paperwork from your uni, you can have the visa extended, and the name of your institution ( visa sponsor ) updated in their ( immigration ) file or database.

Excellent, thanks!
