Hi, My Thai driver's license expires in a few week but I won't be in Thailand for 4 months. How long do I have after it expires to get it renewed before it's cancelled and I have to go through the process of getting a new one? Thanks, BOB

If it's a one year license it cannot be renewed until after it has expired, but if it's a five year licence it must be renewed before it expires.

Your five year license does not fallow the same guidelines as the one year license. You will need the same documentation you used for the original but CAN RENEW NOW, I thank its 3 months early.

Re-new it before you back home,if you are coming back for a period of time.Would be crazy to let a 5 years expire, then you would have to re-apply for a one year one again.

My 1yr licence expired in Feb 2008, I renewed it in Nov 2009, as i did not have an IDP I had to do the full theory test, I was then given a 5 yr licence, the lady informed me if I had of renewed it before Feb 2009 there would have been no need for the test.

I'd suggest you check with your local motor vehicle department. My wife just got her one year license last Tuesday, and was told that the rules had changed, and she could get her 5-year license within 30 days of its expiration date; and since I asked, the 5-year license can be renewed within 90 days of its expiration. I don't know if this is a country-wide thing or just my local office, so it's worth a phone call or better, a quick trip.
