Crime Fugitive Extradited to China After 31 Years on the Run for Embezzlement
Picture courtesy of Daily News. Authorities have extradited Zhou Jinghua, a Chinese national who fled to Thailand over three decades ago to escape prosecution for embezzlement of state assets in China. She was returned to Chinese custody on 18 July following a lengthy legal process. Zhou, also known by the aliases Zhou Chanling and Jinghua, had been on the run for 31 years after allegedly abusing her official position in the People’s Republic of China to commit large-scale embezzlement. She evaded capture by assuming a false identity and even married a Thai man to further conceal her whereabouts. In 2023, Chinese authorities formally requested her extradition through official channels, leading to her arrest and detention at the Central Women’s Correctional Institution in Thailand on 26 October 2023. The Department of Corrections confirmed that on 15 July 2025, Thailand’s Court of Appeal upheld a lower court ruling ordering Zhou’s extradition. The verdict allowed a 90-day window for the transfer, which has now been executed in accordance with Thai law and international treaties. Zhou had served one year and seven months in Thai custody before her transfer, after which she was handed over to representatives from the Office of the Attorney General and the Royal Thai Police. The extradition was carried out in compliance with Thailand’s 2008 Extradition Act and the 1993 bilateral treaty between Thailand and China. The case, closely monitored by the Chinese government, highlights ongoing international cooperation on cross-border crime and fugitive apprehension. Corrections officials noted the importance of due process and strict adherence to legal protocols throughout the extradition procedure. Adapted by Asean Now from Daily News 2025-07-24 -

Middle East Urgent Plea: 28 Nations Unite for Immediate Gaza Ceasefire
Gaza is suffering man-made mass starvation caused by the blockade of aid into the territory, the head of the World Health Organization has said, as more than 100 agencies urged Israel to let supplies in to alleviate the crisis. “I don’t know what you would call it other than mass starvation, and it’s man-made, and that’s very clear,” Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told a virtual press conference from Geneva. “This is because of [the] blockade.” A letter signed by 109 agencies including Doctors Without Borders, Oxfam International and Amnesty International says the Israeli government is blocking humanitarian organisations from effectively distributing life-saving aid. Crime Four Myanmar Nationals Arrested for Tourist Thefts on Koh Phangan Using Drone Surveillance
Picture courtesy of Daily News. A gang of four Myanmar nationals has been arrested on Koh Phangan for allegedly stealing from tourists during the night, with police revealing that the suspects used drones to scout properties before carrying out their crimes. Officers from Koh Phangan Tourist Police launched a surveillance operation following reports from several tourists who claimed their valuables had gone missing during the night. Acting on intelligence, investigators raided a rental home in Moo 3, Koh Phangan subdistrict, Surat Thani province. During the raid, officers discovered quantities of methamphetamine along with drug paraphernalia. The four foreign suspects were detained and taken in for questioning. They initially confessed that the drugs had been purchased from a fellow Myanmar national based in Surat Thani town. Further checks revealed that two of the individuals had overstayed their visas by 158 days, adding immigration offences to their charges. According to police, the group employed a drone to fly over residential areas, identifying houses where doors or windows had been left open. Once a target was confirmed, they would break in and steal valuables while residents slept. The investigation began after multiple theft complaints from tourists staying on the island. Two suspects were first apprehended while attempting a robbery. Under interrogation, they disclosed information that led to the arrest of the remaining gang members. Authorities are now coordinating with immigration officials and considering further legal action. Adapted by Asean Now from Daily News 2025-07-24 -

Politics Acting Thai PM Phumtham Backs Paetongtarn Shinawatra Amid Court Case
Picture courtesy of Paetongtarn Shinawatra Instagram Thailand's political scene is electrifying as acting PM Phumtham Wechayachai supports the suspended Paetongtarn Shinawatra, confident she will overcome the Constitutional Court case against her. Speaking at the Interior Ministry today, Phumtham expressed his belief that Paetongtarn would soon return to power. As Deputy PM and Interior Minister, he maintained her innocence, stating that Paetongtarn has been transparent with the public and was merely seeking to resolve tensions involving Cambodia’s Hun Sen. Accusations against Paetongtarn arise from a petition by senators, which cites alleged dishonesty related to a leaked call with Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen. The conversation, dated June 15, included controversial remarks potentially affecting national sovereignty. Phumtham Wechayachai. Picture courtesy of The Nation Phumtham, who was present during the call, downplayed its significance by asserting that it was informal and initiated by Hun Sen rather than Paetongtarn. The leak has sparked fierce debate, with potential career-ending implications for Paetongtarn if the court's decision goes against her. Adding to the political heat, Phumtham faces accusations from senators alleging abuse of his position over a related investigation. However, he dismissed these charges as mere distractions, defending his actions as part of his official duties. The court's decision remains critical, as it could alter the political landscape, reshaping power dynamics in Thailand's government and testing the resilience of Paetongtarn's support network.
