It's mafia controlled and you have next to no chance of picking up anything decent at these customs auction.

They are already allocated to customers and money paid under the table before the auction even starts.

There are a few "normal" car auction companies. One being Inter Auction in Muang Ton Thani (spelling?) I have never been to an auction, I just know they are there.

As you can see they even list the cars.

Have to agree about the customs auction.

Dont even think about bidding for a car that in reality has been chosen by the thai dealers there, my understanding is that several models ie, mercedes/bmw/lexus ect ect are imported by thai individuals without any intention of paying import duty.

They just wait for the car to come through the customs sale and buy at a low price fixed by thai mafia groups of buyers.

In fact I think I am right in saying that a few years ago the sales were suspended while a supposed investigation was being carried out into this import scam.

Strange thing was that my car never appeared at the sales (Toyota Supra) and this was around the supposed investigation time, somehow I think mine was bought at the port (Laem Chabang) by one of the customs guys and then sold on to a dealer.

So for me I never got the chance to even try to buy it back.

Mike. :)

Thanks onlooker, (^ Hence the 'tuktukmike' not 'supramike' ) not really, www.tuk-tuk.co.uk

But maybe for the best, first customs price for import duty 385,000bht. one week later just before arranged pick-up of car 575,000bht. After much soul searching and agreeing the new price and again a day before collection 1,200,000bht.

Went to the port and met with customs officials and explained this was too much so the head honcho tells me to get the new price in dollars, spent half a day in Pattaya searching the internet and found the original price when new in dollars.

Went back and showed the paper to head honcho at customs and his reply, If we accept this price then we give you no age related discount which meant the car would cost even more to import. :D:)

So I returned to pataya and drowned my sorrows, :D

Never import a car that the customs guys may take a liking too, in fact never import a car full stop

One of my friends works as a repo man for a finance company.

Many of these repossesed cars are cannibalised before making it to the auctions.

As noted above just because you are bidding for a 2009 camry dont assume it still has the original parts or accessories fitted.

Yes, you can listen to the engine, but you can't check if suspension, drive shafts, shocks, bushes, brakes, wheelbearings, etc, etc, are good or not or if automatic transmission or their electronic mamagement system works fine (and that could be very expensive, a tranny for a Honda City 2004 for example, cost a 100 grand).

Cars at auctions are usualy 20'k cheaper than in a local tent ( to small amouth to take the risk), unless they are in a very bad condition, then they are not really cheaper, but it depend on the outstanding balance from the finance companies. If there is a 400'k open to the finance on a 2year old vios, then they can't sell it cheaper than 430'k (for 550 you get a new one). Paperworks is a hassle and you never get the blue book at the same day.

Even me, i never buy cars at auctions, because i can't tesddrive them. I'm me self are in a position wich i can buy a car without open the engine hood. I can feel and hear everything during a testdrive. But i can never judge or buy a car, when i can not testdrive it. There could be to manythign wrong than just only the engine.

So, where i can find a good car in good condition at a reasonable price ? Everything is overpriced here.
This is the way it is. If you want European or US prices, you have to buy a car in Europe or US.

I, in fact, bought a car from the December 2010 Customs Auction and have to say that the whole experience was remarkably straight forward for Thailand. I appeared the day before to look at the cars (a bit of a waste of time since you could only see in the window and check the body).

The higher end cars: BMW,Benz, Jags were well presented and in apparently good shape. I had done my research before on line, know what was available and interesting for me and decided the price I could support after looking and talking to the tents about similar cars.

I went with 4 cashier's checks for 4 vehicles and was told I only needed 1 check of 50,000 THB to get into the bidding.

The next day I got there and watched them go thru about 90 vehicles until "mine" came up. In general Benz's were a little overpriced but still better than tents as were BMW's but some pretty good deals at 30-40% off the tents pricing.

I "won" the one I wanted and towed it a week later to my mechanic.

Picking it up was easy: cashier's check for the bid amount, they gave me back my deposit and a Yellow Slip and promised the file to be sent to the Transport and myself for a blue Book by mid January 2011

The car "as is" was relatively fine and clean sitting too long so bushings, bad fuel, brakes but nothing major at all.

Maybe the best do get picked off but there was no pressure, no Mafia component and the customs people were very obliging throughout. Just needed passport and retirement visa copies. A lot of well off Thais bought very expensive cars and happily.

If I have a complaint it is with the female auctioneers, one in particular who was like a kareoke girl with a mike and would not shut up! Took 5-6 minutes a car when the other pro took 1.5 minutes so to get ot 95 took over 4 hours instead of 2 hours but otherwise it was professional.

Frankly, I do not normally post but am tired of reading about how we get screwed because we are farang: this is only about 10% true and the customs auction was a very pleasant experience

Only advice is global: do your homework, know your values and figure the tents will stop when it eats into their profits it is only business for them not emotion
