Can you tell me please< I see some old Toyota's and Nissan's etc. is this series just clubs or can you run say an older VW Golf out there for example? Is there any way to find some rules in English? Or any rules for that matter..

Posted

Yesterday bira event mostly car clubs, they do have a “ u-join “ class where anything goes, no rules, any make, all cars get securitized for safety. Saw cool street driven skyline, evo, supra, impreza, porch, most from Bangkok cruzing around Bira track. Attached are some circuit track rules that were posted for event, schedule, though mostly in Thai.

Yeah it's that Thai thing that makes understanding the rules a problem.... Anyway I wouldn't want to get stuck in the same class with a full on prepared Evo or Cefiro in an 8 valve, slightly beefed basic 1.8 VW.. Grouping would be ok but not the same class.

Maybe you can find a vw club event?? There must be a few other vw owners who would join you.

:) if I had a car here I would join you...shame I can't bring my '91 Golf Gti to Thailand!!! :D

I've been to Birra Circuit a few times in the past with some thai vw friends.

All aircooled but.

Here's A LINK to some photos from a few years back at a VW club race at BIRRA Circuit. (Old modified and stock beetles type 3's)

Would love to go back one day! Having a little bubba has confined our travels to air-conditioned shopping malls and cool afternoon walks in the park lol

Thanks for that, I have campaigned many a VW known as Golfs here but Rabbits back in the States. I looked up VW water cooled clubs here and only one to be found and their website is simply one page with a pic of several of them but no contact info. I'd like to get something going if it doesn't exist already and it seems it doesn't. Maybe over the next few months I will be able to finally get something up and running that's why I'm looking now. Like you I have had 2 little bubba's keeping me from doing anything as well but I still brought them to Bira once when they were about 2 and 3, gotta start them young :D ..

You should recognize these I should think then? The older carburated Rabbit is how they used to be set up and handle lifting the inside rear tire especially if you heal and toe, my evolution of the GTI in the other 2 pictures is how I made my car handle nearly dead level and even engineered my own rear sway bar it was fully adjustable while on the ground and installed, no other such bar available in the world the two newer GTI pics were both record setting weekends with wins..

The pic with the line of cars behind that corner is an awesome corner when done just right and my car loved it and took it about 160Km per hour comfortably (except for the bumps on that track, very bumpy), not bad for a mostly stock VW on street legal tires.. :D

*edit* I don't know how that one picture got duplicated maybe a Mod can delete it as I can't figure out how to..

Superclub Thailand last Sunday was a Clubday for various clubs, Euroclub, Chonburi car club, not overly competitive, good fun. It's not difficult to participate and you shouldnt worry about the grouping. Easiest way to get a bit more involved is to do a few trackdays, there you'll meet the people who can help you further if you want to. But the trackdays themselves are fun already. here's a link www.munmaaktrackdays.com Groups are based on experience, instructors (bi lingual) are available for the base levels. Thats how i got into it..... Next trackday coming saturday on TCN, Nakhon Chaisi....

Thanks, I'll check it out, it will be a few months at least before I can get out there though I can't risk any damage to the car at this point either mechanical or other and it is always going to use resources, I'm not one to just go out and run some circles the whole point for me is going fast and enjoying myself to the maximum. Once you've done that before nothing else really ever satisfies it's all vanilla from there..

I was thinking maybe the Euroclub might be the one to check out so that's where I'll start and though I'm not bilingual I am well qualified to instruct I have also had a Thai racing super license in the past but never got the chance to put it to use yet :) ..

Keep us posted on any VW Thailand club info happenings. Have a 95 Golf here that wifey currently uses as a daily driver, would love to do a few mods to it someday, and run her round a Thai circuit.

By the way, saw a beetle club and also a few Golfs racing around Bangsaen beach circuit last Nov 2009 for final race series of SuperCarsThailand races (attachments uploaded) ; 4 weekend events each year. Believe the golfs were running in some sort of modified 2.0L max class.

Thanks for that, that Golf is definitely not stock just from the outside, no bumpers which I prefer actually for a number of reasons and one of those being aero, what little there is on a Mark I the front bumper actually acts like a splitter so the car isn't a complete brick, the weight is negligible besides giving you a bit of front end protection which more aggressive drivers need :) and more over you can make a bumper copy out of something lighter in such a class.. The newer one Mark IV, I saw at the auto show and it's a shame as it could be so much better and it doesn't even have a rear sway bar other then the factory set up which is a prerequisite for a well handling Golf or any FWD for that matter..

I've tried to contact that guy to see if he'd really like to go fast, but I haven't had any luck to this point as being Thai the prevailing thinking is they don't need any outside help..

When your ready to make your Golf sporty drop me a note, the timing is that I hope to be in a position soon to be doing some modifying and track time...

This is the problem for me, I have far more experience then the car I'd have and my equipment would make me look foolish under the circumstances, that's the curse, if you have second rate equipment but first rate experience :) it's a matter of finances..

Do you heal and toe in the braking zones? Did any instructors teach you that? Or maybe that is too advanced at this point I don't know your level of experience so know offense intended...

What kind of car are you driving? Is it standard, automatic or shiftronic?

I tried that link and it does not come up, is something missing maybe?

Me wrong, typo sorry here's the right one http://www.munmaaktrackday.com/Trackindex.php i hope that works for you.

Really, don't worry about the equipment, its all just fun but safe because we mix old and new cars, we don't race (ok only a bit) and there's lots of people who just want to drive track but not go all out.

I do use both side of my feet :) and have been through the driving schools in europe.

I drive a 6 speed manual Pcar in full race and also use my tiptronic P every now and then on track.

Let me know if you're dropping by on saturday, more then welcome to come and have a look.

This Saturday?? If so I have a very important meeting then, so no go, :) I would have loved to come out................... Well not really..... I don't know if I can explain what is like to watch someone else play with their toys and not be able to...

Anyway as for the fun thing, basically it comes down to what you're used to running and where track speed is concerned it is always far too much work for all too little satisfaction in the best of times so going through all that is necessary to properly prepare etc. after being actually in heated competition ends up being worth naught in fun for me for the most part as that racing thing is more what it is about for me.

Not saying I won't possibly make it out there sometime in the future but not until I have either sufficiently worked my current car or can acquire something for the purpose unless I get really itchy that is.. Nice 944, any chance I could drive it :D ??? That wouldn't change my mind for this Saturday but maybe in a future track day...

Just coming and having a look is the biggest part of the problem :D ...

This is great to see that there is an activity racing community here!

I have to admit I have never done a track day ( only weekend club meets on legal roads- we drive at speed limit most the time). back home I own a Mk2 Golf Gti, with minor tuning and modifications.

This weekend is not possible as I have plans with my family for a trip south of Hua Hin, but will keep in mind for the future. 2500 Baht for a day is very good value.

All the best, would love to see some pics posted up after Saturday.

Warpspeed, love the old Mk1's don't see many for sale here but!!

I saw one for sale on Ladprao road, I think its still there. Silver 5 door, looked straight. Not sure on price.

Interested in thisGolf Mk3 with Porsche Alloys.

Would need a bit more poke in the engine bay, but that can be easily done ..add a 2 litre or even better a 3.2 VR6 from a Caravelle :D

Posted

I saw that Golf you posted and also saw a 1980 something MK I on sale online the other day but for 99,000b and in crap shape!! My head just won't let me get around that price, I can buy Mk I's all day long for 50 to $100 back home :)

Could you check on the MK I you saw? Or is too much problem?? Have a Thai contact them and ask so the price is REAL...

No need to put a larger engine in it, just adds weight and then bigger brakes and heavier springs, sway bars etc. to compensate plus throwing off the balance even further to 70/30 by adding more weight to the front plus putting the power down also becomes a problem with wheel spin and torque steer.

For these tracks here plenty of fun can be had with just a few piston changes the quickest way is add some diesel pistons, a head shave or block decking, cam exchanges, brake upgrades/or not the factory brakes are really fine with correct compound pads, a header, some fuel adjustments like installing GTI injector banjo fitting bolts which flow more, Injector matching, a GTI throttle body coupled with an Audi manifold for better flow (all bolt on), port matching and polishing, lightened, hardened crank and high flow oil pump, air to oil cooler, some adjustable dampers best for me is Koni 3 way, stiffer springs front with coil overs and big sway bar rear, spherical bearing suspension joints mated with urethane for stiffness, response, comfort and durability this will add far more performance then any track here will ever need given their length and difficulty.. I forgot, make it left drive too as VW has engineered that weight balance in their cars and they are out of balance with the driver on the right side here.. Lets not forget a nice Sachs or Luk clutch to put the power down without failure and help with down shifting and left foot braking on over taking.

Most of that won't cost as much as the engine swap (not including labor) and bring far more fun and less engineering problems, there is no trade for a swift handling car with sufficiently balanced power for the fun factor..Now that's a fun package with very little major maintenance also good for practical driving I might add..

I see there is a corporate day feature with the link that Hak posted, I had mentioned in another thread the possibility of a Thai Visa track day and maybe they are the ones to organize such an event and since then there have been a few people posting their involvement in motorsports so I think it might be a nice social family day to be had for those who both want to drive and maybe just those who'd like to have a meet up, be as involved as one wants....

Sounds good... will bring the 8 wheeler for the little one :)

All I'd say is, if you're interested to get (back) into fun with cars, drop by any of the events, you can always stroll the paddock and catch up.

See I knew I'd never be able to take my current car out for some hot laps until I can thoroughly go through it, tonight the diff crapped out and now I need a rebuild as I was going to get it done in short time anywaybut hoped for a more planned and opportune time. Anyone know of a good, reasonably priced manual VW transmission builder in Bangkok :) ?
