PM: Negative Impact of DAAD on Economy Apparent in March

BANGKOK: -- Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said the negative impact of the red-shirt rally on the Thai economy became apparent in March, which contrasted with the healthy growth experienced during the first two months of the year.

Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said, in his Sunday weekly program, that the negative impact of the Democratic Alliance Against Dictatorship or DAAD rally started to become apparent in March, after the Thai economy enjoyed healthy growth during the first two months of the year.

Abhisit said the government will closely monitor the situation in order to minimize the effects of the rally on the economy.

He gave assurances that despite the ongoing political problems, the government will continue to address other problems Thailand is facing such as drought, the price of agricultural products, and informal debt refinancing.

He has tasked the Finance Ministry with compiling a proposal for the second phase of the informal debt refinance program.

He revealed that a proposal for debt restructuring in the agricultural sector, and a proposal on property and building tax will be discussed in a Cabinet meeting soon. He will also push for the completion of a budget proposal for the fiscal year 2011, which the prime minister said will be on schedule.

He added that the upcoming ASEAN summit meeting in Hanoi, held from April 6th through the 9th, will be about concrete efforts to realize an ASEAN Community by 2015 through various mechanisms designed to ensure that each member country can develop itself toward this common aspiration.
