Hi

I am not married and have a 12 month non O multi entry visa from Perth Oz. I had been told but never checked that it can be used to get a work permit. I have since been told the opposite. I have to get a work permit now, so if anyone to clarify this for me I'd be happy to here

many thanks

You certainly can apply for a WP on a Non-Imm-O.

Do this first and wait what Labour department says. They may require you to obtain a Non-Imm-B in order to actually issue the WP.

The rules only say that you need a non-immigrant visa to receive a work permit. Some Labor Offices will ask for a non-immigrant "B" visa. Immigration extension of stay is another issue to be considered.

The Non-Immigrant visa has to be one that supports working, so that means either Non-B or Non-O visa. Extension of stay is not relevant as the Op states he is not married.

How about an extension of stay based on employment since the OP is asking about a work permit.

Do you know what the preference of the labour office (not far from Victory Monument / Din Daeng if my memory serves me) in Bangkok is?

You can use either Non-B or Non-O visa to support work permit application.

He can't get extension of stay based on employment without having WP, and that requires Non-B or Non-O visa first.

the employer wants to send me to Laos to get a non B. I am thinking go to the labour office right now and get an official to give me a written confirmation that the visa is ok to make a work permit application. Is that a reasonable idea? And which road is the labour office on, as I have forgot..

You have to go to the labour department first anyway. First you apply for the work permit and then they will give you a WP3 receipt. That indicated to immigration or an embassy that you will get the work permit once you have the proper visa. With the WP3 you go to immigration and if they don't want to give you the extension you go abroad to a Thai embassy or consulate.

Given you have a valid non-O multiple visa you should get the extension form immigration.

I just spoke to the Labour Dept. and they said that it will probably not be accepted

I think that means it will be accepted if you pay 500 or 1000 Baht.

Doesnt it say in capital tetters on an O visa "not permitted to work" or something?

Nope! None of mine (visas or extensions) say anything of the type.

I've had a WP on an O visa in the past, right now I'm between Thai employment but I know of no changes in the rules. Some employers don't know / want to attach a WP to an O visa.

NOTE an OA (retirement) visa or extension will not support a WP.
