Hi,

I am planning to get an ED Visa in Kuala Lumpur. I have several questions and would appreciate any feedback.

I've checked the Thai embassy in KL website and they ask for many documents such as :

1 Three completed and signed application forms

OK

2 Three photos (colour, size 4 x 6 cm)

OK ...3 photos is enough ?

3 Passport (valid for no less than 6 months)

OK

4 Copy of ID card

? mandatory ?

5 Copy of residence certificate (Carnet de Residence/ Family Record Book)

?

6 Admission letter from school in Thailand (original) – The letter must be typed in the school's head and signed by authorized managing director

OK

7 Recommendation letter from a school in Cambodia (original in the company's or school's letter head)

?

8 Copy of parent's ID card

?

9 Financial reference, such as bank statement showing personal savings or checking account

? mandatory ?

10 Reference person and address in Thailand with photocopy of reference person's ID card

? mandatory ?

11 Airline ticket or confirmation slip with flight number and date of entry

OK

Could anyone indicate the real mandatory documents he had to provide ?

Apparently the cost is 60 USD, can I pay in MYR as well ?

I arrive in KL on Tuesday 27 april afternoon then I will apply for visa the next Wednesday 28 morning. How long to get it ?

Could I collect my visa on Thursday 29 afternoon ?... actually my flight back to BKK is on Friday 30 6:45 pm and it would be a bit short to collect the visa on Friday 2 pm and get to the airport....

Thanks a lot

PS: I am French national

I have no idea where you were looking that came up with a requirement for "letter from a school in Cambodia" but KL (Thai Embassy) does not have a web site.

That is a holding page for Embassy KL information provided by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Bangkok to provide general information rather than a web site operated by the Embassy and can find no link to the page you linked to from the home page so suspect the information it invalid and not supposed to be visible - it appears was not intended for KL when it is talking about Cambodia.

Can understand your confusion - I would email them as others have received replies that way, or call them. But remember next weeks is almost all holiday.

I have already emailed them few weeks ago with no answers ...

I ve checked the working hours & holidays section and it seems that the last week of april only 26 is holiday... so it would be ok (I land in KL on 27)

Thanks anyway Lopburi

I would appreciate a real feedback from someone who went there recently for ED visa :)

Hi Yamcha,

Getting an ED visa in KL is not so difficult as people/websites would make it seem. I got mine from there and they were very helpful and, as usual in Malaysia, very friendly.

Documents you need to take with you are:

1. Passport

2. 2 PP Photographs

3. Letter from the school

4. Letter from Minister of Education – this is not needed for the first 2 applications for ED visa but you will be told that, if you go back a third time, you must bring this acceptance letter from the MOE as, without it, you will need to go there to get a new visa every 90 days. There is no way to convert this to “in country” extensions if you obtain the MOE letter after you have already entered Thailand and you will need to fly out again to get yet another ED visa supported by the MOE letter.

5. You will be given an application form when you arrive at the embassy by the security guards there. Just fill it in and hand it to the clerk inside when your number is called.

6. The fee’s are only payable in MYR, no other currency is accepted by the embassy.

7. If they accept the passport /documents and take your money then you will have your visa the next day after 14:30 hours. If there is any query or they want something else they will ask/tell you straight away.

The rest of the things you mention are not required.

As for being French, sorry about that but its no detriment for you getting an ED visa :)

Hope the info helps.

I agree with Falcon although I didn’t find KL all that friendly, but that’s another post. Below is pasted from a post about my Chiang Mai-Kl run for an ed visa last year:

KL worked just as advertised for me back in Nov. Get your paper work in order as the KL Thai Embassy web site describes and have local currency in hand. As stated drop off in the morning, pick up the next day at 2 if I recall. If you don't want to wait long, bring an umbrella and arrive at least a half hour early. When you get in the gate stand by the door (not the covered seats), the umbrella is for shade. As long as your paper work is correct out and you get in the front of the line you'll be in and out in 30 min. Be sure and keep the receipt they give you, it's how they find your paper work when you return for pick up. Pick up is fast, but you may still want to arrive early and que at the door.
