at the airport hordes sleep on the card boxes, free blankets, food and (sometimes) free massages given by the airport authorities

Massage is a nice touch...(no pun intended!!!)

But, the yellow spin Drs' have missed a chance to mobilise public opinion.

Under European rules it is the airlines responsibility to take care of you, inclusing providing shelter, if you are stranded. That goes for when you fly an European based airline OR when the ticket was bought in Europe.

Yeah, sure.....Most will be following Ryan Scars policy of........it's nothing to do woh us!!!!!

This situation falls under the rules EU rules. But you have to tell the airline you need help, you can't just file a claim afterwards.

in the case of thai airways (and many other airlines flying from bangkok) they are not obliged to offer any help. Raynair is forced now to pay some £50mln compensation for food, drinks and accommodation to the stranded passengers, some 50k applications are already processed

Fact is; most airlines can't afford it, and are claiming ot isn't them but the government (whichever) are liable.

If the they were sticking to the rules/reg's; there wouldn't be so many folk in the airports. They would be all tucked up in nice hotels, paid for by the airlines!

To clarify, for passengers flying from Thailand the rule only applies if;

1. PAX are flying into the EU from an overseas destination if they are using a EU based airline such as Lufthansa, BA, AF.

The specific regulation reads as follows;

The protection accorded to passengers departing from an airport located in a Member State should be extended to those leaving an airport located in a third country for one situated in a Member State, when a Community carrier operates the flight.

This means that the rule does not apply to TG, BR, SQ, CX, etc. if the flight is not originating in the EU. All that these airlines have to do is to provide a refund or a rebooking.

Note that in respect to code sharing flights, if the carrier is an EU based carrier, the protection will extend. For example if one had booked a one world American Airlines ticket, but the carrier was actually BA, then the rule applies. If it was CX then the rule would not apply.

The rule also applies to non scheduled flights like Charters and extends to those flying on frequent flyer miles. People with complimentary tickets are not covered.

With the current natural and man made problems, the airline and the traveler will be the ones to ask/answer both sides questions. To the op; ok, I will offer help to the stranded traveler: female under 35 year, acceptable height/weight ratio, beautiful (send photo), good personality, can travel to CM on their nickle, unattached (no rug rats or boy/girl friend accompany them, can cook over campfire (pinto beans, bbq, camp bread, etc), likes mature men, with little money, ambition, sex drive, nor desire to travel. Oh did I mention a strong urge to satisfy old men desires (the sky is the limit). Will approach discussion on washing, ironing, cleaning, etc after initial try out.

I may spring for 1000 baht a week (negotiable) and will throw in local grub and shelter if relationship becomes long timer.

We used to dream of living in a cardboard box.

A cardboard box ... they are lucky ... we could have never afforded that.

No wonder Europe is headed down the tubes and thanks to Obama the US will be right behind. :)

in the states the airlines do not have to compensate for situations that are out of their control like weather or political situations. Europe is more socialist so I can see how they would enforce such a ruling on the private sector. The US I am sure is not far behind on such deals.
