According to the report, five M79 had been shot into the rally site with a series of gunshots.

Police Major-General Prawut said that security measures were enhanced with more light provided around the site for rally-goers’ safety.

Prawut has an exceptionally dry sense of humor. :)

I don't know why people act surprised the government announced that soldiers would be armed. Gave the protesters lots of warning and time to leave. Why can't the soldiers defend themselves?

Look's to me like the guy hit with a rubber bullet in the eye. The Chulalongkorn hospital did not confirm any dead, only this guy in serious condition.

rgds

We have no evidence that the army has used live ammo on protesters tonight, there have been at most one death, Seh Daeng was targeted, possibly by the military, but he would have and has done the same thing when he targeted military commanders on April 10. His own tactics were used against him. Still there is nothing stopping the protesters from returning to their homes even now.

If that's a exit wound from a rubber bullet through the eye, why is there no large gaping exit wound in S. D.'s head?

TAN Network: Reports indicate that Jatuporn and Arisman are the only remaining leaders who won't surrender

Looks like Veera's 4-day negotiation spell couldn't get bail for these two hate-mongerers. Ahh shucks

If those two dingbats won't surrender, that means the other dozen dingbats have surrendered, does it not? If so, where are the photos of the others - Waipoj, Kokaew, Kwanchai, Payap, Natawat, Saikua, Aree, Weera and Dr Weng IN HANDCUFFS OR BEHIND BARS?

Panithan: CRES in control of areas around Rajprasong now

Deputy PM's Secretary-General Panithan Wattanayakorn said Friday that the Centre for Resolution of Emergency Situation is now in control of the situation of the areas around the Rajprasong rally zone.

Panithan, acting government spokesman, said security checkpoints of police and troops managed to block people from entering the protest zone.

"So, the situation is now stable and the authorities are in control," Panithan said.

- From the Nation newspaper

No body believes the situation is under control, but the big question is: WHY WEREN'T THESE THINGS DONE WEEKS AGO?

I would suggest that Sae Daeng was not taken out by a rubber bullet. That was a separate incident to where the other protester was hit. Sae Daeng was apparently hit in the head or back of the neck. The neck seems more probable given that, as you said, there was no gaping exit wound.

There were reports of army and protesters clashing around 11pm. The protester was reportedly hit in the eye with a rubber bullet.

Wow. What a ridiculously silly thing to say at this stage in the game. You'd have thought they'd have learned after the SC Hotel fiasco to stop making claims like this. It only irks the public more and makes them look ridiculous.

Eveybody sleeping...so yes under control until they wake up.

Its 10am here Jerry, nobody sleeping now, and by the sound of it the number of bang fai and other explosions round Sala Deang nobody's in control of anything.

Obviously Seh Daeng caught a real bullet, but if one bullet stops the protest it would be worth it instead of waiting and having to use thousands.

I've got 2 more sniper targets to assign, and then we can all go home. Where is Tom Beringer when you need him.

I wrote this for another thread but it maybe fits better here.

Going beyong whether a government should order unarmed protest leaders to be assainated, I think they(whether it be Prem, or abhisit , or abhist's handlers) have made a tactical error.

In my opinion Thaksin's worst miscalculation was on the southern insurgency - which he thought could be quickly quelled by some hard force- he underestimated it and it got worse.

This will be minor though compared with what might happen throughout the kingdom if the government think that they can take out leaders and everything will go back to normal. There are literally millions of Thais who ae sympathetic to the Red movement, who really believe they have been robbed of their vote, and even if only a few thousand take up arms they will be supported - underground- throughout the country.

You seem so certain Khattiya's shooting was by government forces when maybe being not so certain is the more realistic path

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In the AP interview, he accused Red Shirt leaders of taking government bribes to accept Abhisit's reconciliation plan to hold elections on Nov. 14.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Khattiya, who only hours earlier had threatened to take over the red movement from moderate leaders, was shot by a sniper shortly after giving an interview

Khattiya's relations with red "political" leaders had been soured after some of the latter showed eagerness to embrace Abhisit's fivepoint roadmap to reconciliation.

Before April 10, he and red leaders had disavowed each other

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In addition, Army Specialist Maj Gen Khattiya Sawasdipol alais Seh Deang cited that Mr Veera’s disappearance resulted from his knowledge of some confidential information and his attempt to seek ways to step down and join his family, residing in the United Kingdom.

thanks, but I know the time...as I am under the same latitudes and meridians. But people must be exhausted by the night events and as already stated, Ratjasaprong is active end of afternoon...

One thing nobody talks about: there are obviously third parties involved, government should take position about that, if not it is once more double standards

So what, if Ratchaprasong will be cleared,... then the red shirt protestors will find other parts of Bangkok to occupy, eh????

You are right, so each protester should be arrested and prosecuted under the law, each are subject to a two year prison term under current laws.

Red-shirts Hijack 3 Military Vehicles

The red-shirt group has hijacked 3 military vehicles close to Lumpinee Park and Sathorn Road.

Sand was poured into the gas tank while protesters battered the car with sticks and stones.

Incredible. Don't the military know how to protect their own people/equipment? Where was the rubber bullet/tear gas support for the poor buggers inside this vehicles?

Yes, I spend 50% of my time travelling around Thailand....will be back soon in Issan.

Back to the events, I have another hypothesis about the Red Shirt leaders; some are in province organising the reply....We should have an answer soon.

Skirmishes Between Protesters and Military Personnel Near Sala Deang Intersection

UPDATE : 14 May 2010

At approximately 8 A.M. today, red shirt protesters clashed with military personnel near the Sala Deang Intersection in front of the U Chu Liang Building on Rama 4 Road.

Protesters were angered when they saw mobile security units on motorcycles pass by their bunker.

Red shirts proceeded to surround the unit and started to use force. Soldiers were forced to shoot their guns into the air, prompting a response from a nearby group of red shirts who shot firecrackers at the security personnel.

No injuries were reported.

Meanwhile, red shirt protesters have closed one lane of traffic on the Thai-Japan Bride on the Lumpini Park side. Only one lane of traffic is allowed to pass. Earlier in the morning, protesters also closed the outbound lane of the Thai-Belgium Bridge, causing heavy traffic congestion in the area.

Only 2 holdouts and they are still there??? What kind of democracy are they running?

Oh, wait ... the kind where unelected leaders lead lambs to a slaughter while they work out deals to save their own behinds. The kind where they never ask their lambs for their opinions and only tell them what to do ... such as fight soldiers with your bare hands as we hide out from them.

Abhisit's medal be be for NOT Doing anything! this event was not a surprise - it was even postponed - it is a problem that has it routes BEFORE Thaksin - poor old Abhisit is not a leader he is simply a "friend" of the elite - and they will soon dump him. He has already handed over control to the military and in time he'll hand over everything else.

I just read why there is no large exit wound in S. D.'s head, the bullet exited through his neck which makes me think the angle is from pretty high up. I read earlier on this forum that the shot came from a hotel room.

Did they give you the room number and hotel name too? Seh Daeng was short, so maybe the angle was affected by that too, maybe he was shot by a red guard who was six feet tall standing behind him. Can't take info in this forum as gospel.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Spot on - it's not at all clear who was behind the shooting - the guy had made many enemies with his undisciplined criminal behaviour and outrageous remarks. He acted more like a mafia leader than a senior army officer. In fact not unlike his boss and the other hardliners like Jatuporn....

The source said the hardcore red shirt leaders rejected the reconciliation plan and wanted to press ahead with their protest because Thaksin did not want the rally to end and had telephoned Mr Jatuporn to issue a set of demands to the government.

Thailand's Red Shirts up security in tense Bangkok

AFP May 14, 2010, 1:09 pm

BANGKOK (AFP) - Thailand's "Red Shirt" anti-government protesters stepped up security Friday after clashes left one dead and eight wounded, including a renegade general allied with the demonstrators.

Black-clad guards at entrances to the sprawling protest site in central Bangkok were armed with slingshots and arrows Friday morning, and had sealed access at one main entrance.

The fresh violence in the capital late Thursday came after Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva shelved a plan to hold early elections in November and hopes faded for a resolution to the crippling political crisis.

Renegade Major-General Khattiya Sawasdipol -- who had been accused of trying to stymie government moves to reconcile with the protesters -- was shot in the head and seriously wounded while giving an interview to a newspaper journalist close to the protesters' camp.

Another demonstrator died in clashes with security forces.

Red Shirts vowed no surrender despite the shooting of the fiery general, known as Seh Daeng.

"If you think the shooting of Seh Daeng will scare leaders and make them not dare to take the stage, you are wrong," one of the protest leaders, Jatuporn Prompan, said at the rally site.

"No matter what the weapons are, it means nothing to people who are calling for democracy like us. We will not leave here as losers."

At 9:10 am Friday, protesters besieged a mobile broadcast unit of Channel 3 outside the Lumpini Park.

The protesters alleged that Channel 3's reports were biased against the red-shirt people.

The protesters eventually freed the broadcast vehicle following a talk with staffs of the TV station.

No one was injured in the incident.

sound of 2 grenades just a moment ago coming from red area...

birds fly away in panic, people could not look more calm...

private cars, tuk tuks, taxis still flowing on Rajaprarop, despite being reported "closed" and 2 year jail sentence threatened for offenders...

Birds obviously have more sense than the morons out there fighting the army with sling shots and bottle rockets.

One Thai dies in clash between troops, anti-government protestors

08:27, May 14, 2010

A Thai civilian died in clashes between the anti-government protestors and troops on late Thursday night in central Bangkok, Thailand's national emergency center said.

The man was shot during the clashes near the Lumpini Park, which is located next to the Silom Road -- the business area -- in central Bangkok.

The 25-year-old man, who was sent to a hospital near the scene, was later confirmed dead, the (Erawan's) Bangkok Emergency Medical Service Center, told Xinhua.

The clashes also resulted in injuries of several protesters.

The clashes near the Lumpini Park followed a series of gunshots and explosions, which took place at about 07:25 p.m., at a rally site near the Silom Road.

In this incident, at least 20 people were reportedly injured and among these included anti-government leader Major-General Khattiya Sawasdipol, who was shot and suffered a gun wound on his head.

Hence, Thailand's acting national police chief Police General Pateep Tanprasert has ordered police personnel to stay alert with highest level of security measures, the National News Bureau of Thailand quoted Police Major General Prawut Thavornsiri, spokesman of the national police operation command, as saying.
