Ok, I live in Southwest Florida, I will be going to Thailand for the first time this August...

What is suggested in terms of taking a plane? Certain airlines? Prices?

Any suggestions appreciated.

For long haul flights, it is usually cheaper to use 1 airline from door to door instead of a combination of airlines. Having done a quick search using Tallahassee as departing airport, shows Delta all the way to BKK & return for $1713.

I found that on skyscanner.net.

This is a good site I use to find airfares.

http://matrix.itasoftware.com/cvg/dispatch/

If asked, long on as 'Guest'. It's only a search tool. If you see a fare that interests you, click on the fare, then 'show booking details' on the left side under

Under the details, it will mention on how to go about booking that fare, i.e. airline website or travel agent.

I noticed that fares are quite high, over $2000, but drop mid August with Korean Airlines.

Call your neighborhood travel agent. Unless you plan to fly regularly, the budget airlines, Korea Air and Asiana have the cheapest r/t flights and no accrued air miles. I fly AA out of Dallas and every fourth trip is free (twice a year). You need to stay at least a month because I once went for two weeks and when I got over my jet lag it was time to come home to more jet lag. It's worth the 24 hours travel time though. A great country and a great people who still like Americans.

American airlines has a strong presence in Florida and could provide you with a good connection with its (One world partners);

the routing example; Miami - Dallas - NRT (Narita) change to JAL - BKK (Bangkok), or within the CONUS of US; Miami - LA - NRT- BKK.

* other option is to reverse your flight plan - fly to a European hub city (alliance with One world) and then direct to Bangkok.

Also, there are many asian carriers which have good pricing as well as good connection. You should check if an Asian carrier

can be found at your nearest International airport in Florida.

KoreanAir (excellent airline) seems best bet. Checking from Orlando-BKK in early August US$1763 seems about lowest price. But if you can wait a month in early September the price goes down to US$1063 for the r/t.

How much would it be just one way?

I flew One Way this past December from Daytona Beach to Chiang Mai for $1049.00 on Korean Air. If you want Bangkok, the flight I was on continued on to BKK after stopping at Chiang Mai. I had a Korean Air ticket but my flight from Daytona to Atlanta was on American Airlines who has a deal with Korean Air, once in Atlanta I changed planes and flew to Inchan Korea and changed to another Korean Air flight to Chiang Mai. I know that is a lot of plane changing but I only checked my bags once as I departed Daytona and did not have to mess with them again until I arrived in Chiang Mai. Korean Air treated very well and I enjoyed the flight even though it was in cattle class.

If your comfortable doing your own booking, it's usually less expensive to book a domestic discount airline like Southwest to the west coast. Then book from there to Thailand. If your flexible on timing some of the discounters will fly you to west coast for well under 200 bucks. LAX or SEA have very inexpensive flights due to all the competition. I always check China Airlines and Cathay Pacific. I've never paid more than 900 total this way.

A friend of mine recommends this travel agent. It's run by an American guy and his Thai wife. Check out their website for contact info and see what they have to offer: www.dktravel.com

Avoid Delta out of Detroit to Tokyo. Their cattle class B747s are brutal if you are a large framed individual. I just made the round trip, big mistake - never again.

I live in the Daytona area , so i dont have any specific answers for you, but i travel to Thailand at leats once a year ( My Wife is from there)and i can give you some advice.First of all know that there are no direct flights to Thailand from Florida, you will connect, to a hub, such as Atlanta, NY, Detroit, etc. from there you will fly to probably, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Korea, etc. and from there connect to BKK . I have flown pretty much every airline that goes to Thailand ( economy)and in my opinion they are all relatively the same. What I look for is, price, connections, and time between connections. What I do some times is, Fly to NY, visit my sister, then next day catch a flight from NY to BKK , and do the same on our return, there are many more flights available from NY, and at a better price. I use Travelzoo.com to search for my flights it allows me the ability to search all the major travel websites at the same time.also check Cathay Pacific airlines, and Malaysian airlines , they some times have some great deals.

Good luck
