Yesterday I purchased;

English Thai Dictionary

TAVOLA DEVELOPMENT

I downloaded the free version first and thought it was a very good application except for the ads that always popped up. The paid download with no ads was 54 MB and the cost was $1.99. I had a Thai friend take a look at it and he was impressed with the translation accuracy. That's the first application I have paid for.

theres an app called ADFREE and it is an adblocker for any annoying ads that might be in some of your other apps

it can auto download the definitions for ads to block daily so if the advertisers change their ads ,AdFREE will have them

blocked again ASAP smile.png

you talking about this one?

Potentially dumb question: I have a Google Wallet account set-up in the U.S. linked to a U.S. bank-issued Visa card.

As I am currently in Thailand and the price shows in THB, if I buy an application do I get hit with a foreign credit card charge fee ($3 in my case)?

(I have purchased apps. in the market before but I happened to be in the U.S. at those times.)

FWIW, I clicked through to the purchase screen and paid $4.99 rather than the 153.31 THB, so a "native" transaction.

BTW, I purchased GrooVe IP which when coupled with a Google Voice account gives free calling to the U.S.A.

Fwiw I have made purchases using UK paypal account linked to UK bank visa card and haven't paid foreign card fees. I did end up paying 20% VAT though, which was irksome... Basically paying an American for a product while in Africa, but paying UK VAT because I have a UK account...

Android Apps 2.5 Times Pricier Than iPhone Apps

Have an Android device? If so, you're paying a lot more for apps than your friends with an iPhone.

The top paid apps in Google's Android Market are priced "dramatically higher," than those in Apple's App Store, according to a new survey from market research firm Canalys. How much more? Android apps actually cost 2.5 times more, on average, than apps for the iPhone, Canalys said.

"In the U.S., to purchase the top 100 paid-for apps in the Android Market would cost $374.37 — an average of $3.74 per app," the company said in a statement. "The top 100 iPhone apps would cost $147.00, or $1.47 on average per app."

The same was true for users in Germany, India, Singapore, and the U.K. And, the gap is even wider for top 20 apps, which are priced, on average, $1.04 for iPhone users and a whopping $4.09 for those with an Android.

Canalys attributed the price disparity to the different retail environments fostered by Apple and Google. In Apple's store, price competitiveness is key and in-app purchases, which generate revenue beyond the initial app payment, are becoming increasingly accepted. Meanwhile, fewer people are willing to pay for apps in the Android Market, so developers have to charge more for their apps to make money.

"Selling more apps at higher prices is the Holy Grail for developers, but achieving big volumes of paid apps on Android is no small challenge," Rachel Lashford, Canalys' managing director for mobile, said in a statement. "More aggressive price competition around Android apps would help to encourage more consumers to make their first app purchases, drive greater download volumes, and ultimately be good for the vibrancy of the app ecosystem."

The survey also showed that iPhone and Android users have different interests when it comes to apps. In the U.S., just 19 apps made their way onto the top 100 paid lists for both stores.

Top apps are also pricier in the Android Market than they are in the Amazon AppStore, according to a separate report released this week by mobile analytics firm Distimo.

I have an android and my GF got an iPhone. I mostly use free apps, I do have some paid apps but I never paid for any top app, there is always an alternative - another app that can do the same job just as well for the fraction of the cost or even for free. I also check once in a while and sometimes the app I want can go on sale and then instead of $4.99 I get it for $0.99 or so, good deal if you ask me.

On the other hand most of the Apple apps are paid and even though they may be cheaper than their Android versions, there aren't that many good free apps on the Apple store IMHO. Any time my GF asks me to find something similar to any of the apps I use on my Android, I get really frustrated and pissed at the Apple. She has a iPhone 3GS and she wants to upgrade, I told her to go and read a little bit about the phones, what people say and some comparisons and then deside what she wants. She just wants an iPhone and that's it, I told her if she gets an iPhone I will not touch it with a foot long pole, she will be on her own looking for and downloading apps, I had enough of Apple BS without even owning one.

This was a little offtopic to the never ending A vs A debate. It's better if the Apple fans just stay out of the Android topics and vice versa. smile.png

Prices always show as THB because it is based on your IP address, not account address. Last year, when Google had the 10cent sale, my account was charged 3 baht! So it works well, wherever you are. (Never tried buying from Siberia).

Some more:

* Tune in radio (internet radio)

* TinyCam monitor pro - view webcams

* Evernote - seamless cloud syncing of notes across all devices

* AndFtp - ftp client that supports sftp with key based authentication

* ConnectBot - ssh client, supports key based authentication. Awesome :-)
