I have just returned from a 2 weeek holiday in Pattaya and I did not realise there was so many ex special forces personel living in thailand I met up with 5 ex SAS 2 SBS and a couple ex paras and even one 24ish ex SAS and SBS he served in both regiments. I served in the british army for over 25 years and I remember my reimental number but not one of these blokes would tell me there number saying it not allowed . Has any one else met any of these blokes.

Dreamers, I have come across the same thing and when you start to get into details they have no answers and I'm talking about simple things nothing specialised, some of them I doubt where even in the forces let alone anything above and beyond

reimental number, ask them next time to say it forwards and backwards as you were trained. you never forget do you.

We had and old RSM who used to say "We never had numbers-We all knew each other" :)

This is a Troll thread right? But I'll let let it run.

I met one of the old original Flying Tiger pilots in Bangkok a number of years back, he owned the Lucys Tiger Den bar, quite a character, could not walk and in a wheel chair.

I think what the OP was saying that there are a lot of persons around Pattaya who rather exaggerate there military experience, assuming they ever served in the forces to start with...

One day somebody will trowel it on about being in 2 Para to someone from the wrong side of Belfast...

You are talking about Tiger Ryberg. What a legend! I spent the afternoon with Tiger, the day he came out of hopsital. He was taken straight back to the bar, 'Lucy's Tiger Den' in his wheelchair, by his Filippina Wife, minus both legs. God he was in pain, he was one tough bastard! Those were in the good old days in patpong, The Grand Prix Bar and Lcuy's Tiger Den. Rick Maynard, Alan Dawson, Johnny Murdoch, Niel Davis, a young Roger Crutchley on his first overseas assigment, Jaques Kinkaid.

good days. When mostly everything revolved around Patpong.

here you go, I took this from my personally autographed 45 RPM Vinyl Tiger gave me... enjoy!

That was Tiger Rydberg RIP and Rimmer is letting his age slip.

Only out numbered by the retired Navy Seals :D

When I lived in BKK, the owner of one of my favorite restaurants was a Navy Seal... except when he wasn't a Green Beret :D .

I remember a Canadian TV program called "Red Green." One character was always telling tall tales. He was ex CIA, MI5, Special Forces (of about 20 countries) and an expert of any subject mentioned :)

Seriously, the real deal speaks for its self. They don't have to tell you, you sort of pick up on it on your own...

'has anybody ever met an ex----"kingsthorpe boot boy" just wondered'

As it happens I an an ex thrup boot boy. Drinking in the North Star from age 13. Was a bouncer for Peter Cohen at Knights Club at 16 (always cash in hand and never mind the paperwork with Peter).

And I still managed to get in to Brasenose and get a degree and have a proper career.

When sent to Lagos for work I was asked if I was scared. Not f%%king likely after a Saturday night in Tarn...

A bunch of complete knobs, just like the Aussie red Shirt guy. All forces know their regimental number, and all SF can tell you theirs. There is no way to find out where someone served by their Regimental Numbers, unless someone has access to the records in Kentigern House in Glasgow.

Also you cannot serve in the SBS and SAS, you must first pass SBS then you can try selection into the SAS, but you have to leave the SBS if you pass selection.

You sure about that Beano, in 1997 I was with the SF det training on the Chocolate Mountain Ranges in Southern California.

We were based at Yuma US Marine Corp - Air Force Base in Arizona. It was all live fireing training for Balkan Ops.

SBS & SAS were pretty much a combined unit. Good guys, eat a lot of BK's on base.

I have also met these chaps.

Funny that.

I am now looking to meet other people when I am next there but it may be difficult!!!!

I believe Old Sam (Kiwi) is still alive and lives somewhere just outside of Bangkok. He'd be getting on now. I am told he sometimes pops down to Bobby's Arms to catch the odd All Blacks game now and again.

BTW Tigers Bar was on Suriwongse Road, not in Patpong.

I remember it being on Silom Rd, opposite the entrance to Patpong. ???

Although it is a rare occasion I go downtown these days and I find it hard to recognise most places anymore, nor even get my bearings, jeez I hope my memory aint that bad. It was on Suriwongse, on the opposite side of the road as you walked out of Patpong I (Qantas Airline End) just down a bit, going towards Rama IV

I agree with your description exactly except my memory says it was Silom not Suriwongsi. I can't remember where Quantas was. I must have gone by it 1000 times while assigned to JUSMAG. I lived around the corner on Soi Pipot I think it was. Oh yes, I looked on internet and an address for Lucy's Tiger Den was given as 285/11 Silom Rd.

I also believe beano to be wrong, those who want to join UK Special Forces,SBS or SAS must pass a joint selection process and have at least 3 years to serve.

I also recall Lucy's being on Suriwongse. This from the early 80's. Also recall the Qantas office at the Suriwongse end of Patpong.

Did a quick internet check and found that the original LTD was located on Silom and subsequently moved to Suriwongse - no note of when.

So both locations are correct!!

Your a bit older than me. Would have started drinking in the North Star at 13 in 1974. Knights was on Castilian Street across from the YWCA. The hottest night was Thursday which was the night the nurses got paid. Everyone paid weekly in cash in brown envelopes. Memories...
