Few mos ago my gf took me to a seafood restaurant that had reviews, a modest cafe sort of place. It was OK. Prices were OK. It was all just OK and the taxi out near Don Muang and back was about 200rt.

There has to be some great seafood here without spending a fortune. I am esp looking for live swimming crab of a proper size. Fresh Grouper/Snapper. Doesn't have to be Prachuap KKhan fresh - but these tiny dry crabs ...just criminal.

THANKS

Go try that seafood market place by the President Park on Suk 24.

Not cheap by any means but fresh.

Start out with a dozen oysters on the half shell. That will get you started.

Thanks. I think I'm just going to buy a kg of crabs at Tesco or take her back to that restaurant given lack of response. Not live but they looked fresh enough, about 275B kg. Up to she.

Thanks

If you feel like a trip out to the Ari BTS station area, Lao Lao restaurant has been in business for 35 years specialising in fresh Chinese-Thai style seafood. Just about every BKK local knows about it and has probably dined there. Not a big attraction for atmosphere, but they do a booming business and the seafood is always fresh and not expensive. Service is efficient and fast as well, and they have an English menu. Between Sois 7 and 9. Look for the BBQ out front where they are grilling the seafood. And you can also see their live crabs on offer there, patiently awaiting their fate on ice.

If you happen to have a car or are looking for a REALLY fresh seafood experience, I recommend taking a day trip out of Bangkok. This would be made easier of course if you had a car or a friend who was willing to show you around =)

Last month I drove to Mahachai Seafood Market, which is located about 1-1/12 hours from downtown Bangkok. Just google "Mahachai" and search it on the maps and you should find it easily. Fresh and cheap catches of seafood from the sea every morning and night, and plenty of good restaurants to go around.

It's quite easy to drive there, signs on the highway are all in English, but it would be nice to know a little that once your there to communicate with the shop keepers if you wish to buy seafood back to the city or have it cooked there.

I had one of the best seafood lunches next to port overlooking where the river enters the ocean. Strong windy breeze + huge crabs / squids / prawns, and then took another 10 minutes drive to walk around the mangroves around the area to digest it all.

Worth a trip if you're bored of the city =)

Samut Sakorn is also a very nice place for Seafood - go to the Ferry Landing there, to the left there is a really great restaurant, an air-conditioned room downstairs and a 2 story open air section next door.

Another excellent place is Khao Sam Muk near Bangsaen - try the restaurant called "Wang Mook" - very popular and the food is fresh and delicious.

WOW, a great deal of recommendations. Yeah, IF I had a car...We'd head down to Ban Sare and just have a nice day on the beach and then eat at the Naval Station in Sattahip. Great, thanks all.
