Fears That Thaksin Plans To Buy Thai Govt MPs

Vote buying is deeply embedded as an acceptable way of doing Thai government/business; illegal but acceptable as long as you don't get caught. Out in the country, it can be as simple as the candidate running for election going around and giving 30 eggs to village residents/voters. At higher govt levels I expect it costs a little more than 30 eggs.

For consumption? Or for throwing?

Depends who is in town speaking that day.

Looks like the transfer window is open. If I were a Democrat or coalition MP this is just the type of rumour I'd start in order to secure a nice offer from my current employer to stay on side.

Everything is for sale in Thailand :)

Buying politicians is how Thaksin came into power in the first place. It's pretty much his bread and butter. Anyone successful with their electorate would eventually switch to the TRT party....

Well in actual fact your confusing your PM's. Thaksin was the elected Prime Minister Abhisit was/is the installed PM after the Military/Elite bought 40 Phuea Thai MPs through their broker Newin Chidbob.

Thaksin purchased Newins block THREE times to get himself or his team elected.

When it came time for the PTP, he lowballed the offer and gave Chalerm primacy.

And has no doubt regretted that decision ever since.

By the way those were never Phuea Thai MP's they hadn't joined yet, or were in other parties.

By why let facts get in the way of a good but put of date rant.

Observing Thai politics, I can never tell which senator has been bought by what tribune who has appointed a particular general who is in debt to which praetor who derives his power from a particular quaestor. And lord knows who will end up princeps.

Let's not forget that he also purchased the single biggest party of the 1996 election, the NAP, in order to achieve the first TRT win in 2001. He was never bold enough to put fresh new TRT candidates up for election in Isaan, knowing that the same old proxies and cabals always win here.

It all mirrors a popular sci fi franchise. Obi Wan Chamlong's protege, Anakin Thaksin, went over to the dark side. As Darth Thaksin, he aquired a death Business Jet in which he flies around, launching attacks on Thailand using his black clad Weng Troopers. The country was saved for the time being by Abhisit Skywalker, under the guidance of Yoda Anand, and aided by Korn Solo, however the dark side remains a constant threat. Big questions remaining to be answered are whether Banharn the Hutt and Lando Newin can really be trusted, and who did kill the Sith lord, Seh Sidious? The senate has no real power or independence, having been infiltrated a long time ago in a galaxy not so far away. The next episode, Thaksin buys back, may bring the answers.

I don't see why this is news.

There are dinosaurs in Thai politics who have feathered their nests for donkey's years by getting paid for their allegiance. In Thai politics it is just a matter of whether they get paid before or after the election and how tightly they are held in line (often in proportion to how reliably they get paid) and Thaksin has proven himself to be a very good payer.

I find it very ironic that for all the crap that has gone on in Thailand, to get rid of Thaksin they used a court, and to get back in Thaksin will win (buy) and election. All of which can be achieved and prevented without protests, coups, burning down buildings, or people getting shot provided that the LEGAL system is UNBIASED and UNCORRUPTABLE.

the public should not take Pheu Thai Party seriously because the party kept changing its statement every day.

There's no shortage of internal strife in the Pheu Thai Party currently.

On June 8th, the Pheu Thai Party kicked out:

Saraburi MP Porapol Adireksan

Sakon Nakhon MP Jumpoj Boonyai

Party-list MP Somboon Wanchaithanawong

Party-list MP Nikom Chaokittisopon,

On June 10th, their very own Deputy Party Leader resigned his position and Party membership:

PTP Deputy Party Leader and PTP MP Parnpree Bahiddanukara

Ain't that the Truth - sad to say. The wonderful Thai people really really deserve better. But who will genuinely care? Not the families constantly fighting for money and power.

Thaksin bought all the NAP MPs bar one when Chavalit didn't have the funds to keep them happy, it came to around 70 MPS.

Thaksin knows the price of everything but the value of nothing.

Well it must be noted that the faction that went against Bhum Jai Thai

and then got ex out of the government/coalition, was controlled by a very high end Police General.

Just another feudal block doing what the liege lord demands.

We know many, if not all, police are very much against Abhisit and

his plans to reign in corruption where he can.

All politicians are for sale in any country one way or another.

Thaksin bought plenty of Dem MPs - virtually all of the Northern Dems and the Dems were the largets party in the north at the time - when he first set up TRT, so why not again. Power games are dirty and anything goes and this power game is pretty much out of control and all based on massive gambles right now

You've been breathing too much swamp gas again Bhumjhaithai weren't formed until after Newin Chitbob and his boys got their money and Newin's dad was installed as house Speaker. As a party they have never stood for election yet they have as much say in what Abhisit does as the Military/Elite. They I think have had one MP elected in an election in Nonthaburi

Abhisit gained more than half of the vote, therefore I declare that Abhisit has been voted as the new prime minister," House Speaker Chai Chidchob announced.

Mr Abhisit becomes the troubled Asian nation's third prime minister in four months. Sitting in the chamber of Parliament House, Mr Abhisit looked calm as each politician stood and declared their allegiance, many taking the opportunity to say a few words. The result was unsure to the very end, with Puea Thai – the reincarnation of the ruling People Power Party – late last week still insisting it could still retain office, even though a key defector had taken as many as 35 MPs with him to support Mr Abhisit and the Democrat party. Before the vote began, politicians grouped in huddles, looking anxious and harried. Thai newspapers reported that Mr Abhisit's party had sequestered a number of the defecting politicians in hotels on Sunday night to ensure they were not wooed backed to the former government coalition, aligned with Thaksin, the deposed and exiled telecoms billionaire.

Let's hope the government can keep track of major cash-flows. Less easy than you would think, the USA is also having a problem with this.

It makes no matter the name of the party, nor the date that party was named,

the players and where and whom they represent have been there all along,

and were a faction in some banner or another.

I posted a list of historical political business Newin did over time.

So I'll put it in terms you can deal with easier.

Thaksin purchased the Chidchob controled Buriram regional power block,

more than once. The names of the parties are incidental. It's the power in play that matters.

One would assume from the above contribution that the unsaid anchor point is that Thaksin did not owe his position when in power with a coalition to the purchase of votes other than that of genuine political alliance. What annoys the Thaksin team more than anything else is when Thaksin's money does not always work as it is supposed to do. ie when a political list is bought it should stay bought. That a political group should change sides is considered shameful. We shall see if the Govt. manages to shut down some of the Thaksin money trail before the next election. That it is now being investigated will give some of the aspiring MPs food for thought.

To put this into context.

Obama spent 600m US$ on his election campaign.

Those who gave it to him expect it back plus interest.

All politicians all over the world are "bought". This is politics. Why does anyone pretend to be surprised ?

Some people "bought" the coup in 2006. People buy support from army generals. People buy support from police to look the other way. People buy judges to get others guilty and themselves innocent. People buy others to create false evidence and to throw real evidence away.

The Thai people elected Thaksin as he was super rich already, their reasoning was that he would be corrupt a bit but not as corrupt as the others. In that they were correct, during TRT times corruption fell (ignore the propaganda).

If they had the chance to vote for him directly tomorrow in an election, Thaksin would win again.

Totally his trademark and expected of him, after the bangkok fires and the red shirt fiasco, he is now taking the game to a whole new level. There was just too much bad publicity with the red shirts for his taste and the tv interviews were getting harder and harder to sail through, he'll now try to undermine the government in other cowardly and treasonous ways, Thaksin style.

He's just not done, not until they slap handcuffs on his wrists.
