Hi, i've already posted a couple of topics with great responses only in the last day, what seems to be cropping up is a frustration on mis-information by the Thai's and a situations of scams/ rip offs

Theres a website from the UK called moneysavingexpert.com, run by Martin lewis, he make a point and a list of all the best deals within the UK, everything from bank charges/ interest earned to insurance, sim card deal, energy prices, etc

So whats the best money saving expert deals are out there on phuket

I'd put forward, commision charges on cheques to clear in banks, simple say i can wait 48 hours and save commision between 200-500 baht depending on the amount deposited.

Second would be 100 baht unlimited for the internet via family mart (spider) and other outlets, buy a 50 baht DTAC sim, top it up with 100 baht, if in range of 3BB request a code off DTac, enter it into 3BB portal and more then 700 hours at 8mb

Anyone else reminded of the viz money saving tips :)

DON'T waste money on expensive ipods. Simply think of your favourite tune and hum it. If you want to "switch tracks", simply think of another song you like and hum that instead.

BOIL an egg to perfection without costly egg timers by popping the egg into boiling water and driving away from your home at exactly 60 mph. After 3 miles, phone your wife and tell her to take the egg out the pan.

Save money on your laundry bills. Give your dirty shirts to Oxfam. They will wash and iron them and you can buy them back for fifty pence.

OLD telephone directories make ideal personal address books. Simply cross out the names and address of people you don't know.

Yes, very drawl you guys, i was trying to be serious and save people money, not in a penny pinching way but in a lets not be robbed by the Thai system way.

I'm sure Mr average on a budget would be greatfull for some money saving tips.

anyway the latest thing i bought off the internet, a import from china reduces your electric bill, a replacement fuse box with a digital readout, don't know the technical name for it, my bill was on average 3500 baht, now never over 600 baht, i know a electrical device uses electric so how can it use less to work, i don't know but within 3 months it had paid for itself, now all my friends are buying and installing them.

"how to save money in phuket"...move to Chiang Mai

Are you joking are is it cheaper to live in Chiange Mai, looking at the current monitory index for the northern provences and the Thai reserve figures i'm afraid if it's a joke your wrong, Chiang Mai is 0.23 more expensive then south Thailand at todays readings, my other passion is a financial analist specialising in asian comodities

I'm sitting here in front of computers screens as we speak, trading, hedging, so i think the joke is certainly not on me

You're comparing Chiang Mai to Southern Thailand.

If you compare Chiang Mai to Phuket, I think you'll find that Phuket is far more expensive.

Phuket is not south Thailand, as you are new here take a drive down south and you will see why Chang Mai is more expensive.

Again i know it's hard to believe but what i look at every day doesn't lie, now if talking about a beer, food, bills, there is no evidence of any price difference only the places where you get them from, the north and south have the same monitory index and capital exchange indexes, could be called something else overhere!!!!!, It's the same argument about the UK, it's cheaper to live up north then the south, not on food, drink only on the capital value of property, that doesn't apply over here. no difference!!!!! only the places where you buy the goods!!!

Chiang Mai was my last place i lived before heading to phuket, i had 28 month there, how long have you lived there may i ask, there's no such thing as book smart, you can't read a book ie fly a jumbo plane, surgery for dummys, living in Thailand without the actual experiance of the actual event, you can read a steamy novel, don't make you a stud!!!!!, need i say anymore???

So, Chiang Mai and Phuket have equal land prices, rents, public transport etc.

I know you can get a bowl of noodle soup for about 15 Bt in Chiang Mai. Cheapest in Phuket is 25 Bt.

Thais from the north complain about the prices here. Phuket is definitely more expensive.

It's absolutaly tit for tat now with you i'm afraid, it's all relative to the index capital expansion jorgon, theres land and property up north more then south, same as there cheaper land and property on certain parts of phuket, noodle soup aside, which by the way i can get for less then your figure.

The topic is money saving ideas, not beat and abuse the single farang woman.

Nothing wrong with money saving ideas. The electric thing you're speaking of that saves 70% of an electric bill sounds a bit dubious, but please tell us what it is. As far as Phuket vs. Chiang Mai, I haven't been to Chiang Mai in 20 years, but I have plenty of friends that live there that when they come to Phuket they complain that Phuket is much more expensive, and this is coming from long term expats, not 2 year wonders.

I know a device that saves electric consumption, as i say unbelievable, One of my friends who recommended the device is sole importer for parts of t asia and hopefully parts of the EEC, legally i don't think i can discuss it apart from it's functionality, he claims it will be the biggest thing to hit energy consumption. maybe pie in the sky, unless someone has given me free electric mine is working as i'm looking at it now, i'll see if i can push for more info and be more public about the device

Mine has no name on it, just a LED screen, whats coming in, energy needed, usage, reduction, whats going out relative to incoming,

My initial argument before was that north was the same or cheaper before moving to phuket, general overall living as stated by the governing bodies say NO, that the essentials, as for taxes, property taxes, cars, petrol, beer, food, stripped down to the basics, the same, we are talking comodities, not items in shops, thats what makes the economy of each country and provence., what a individual shop owner, bar, restuarant, petrol station, noodle stand want to do with there mark up/ bottem line, relates to the cost of living and how it's percieved there endith the lesson!!!!

I'm all in favour of saving money - I'm married............

And Martin'd money tips website is great for The UK.

So, please tell me, where can I buy the energy saving device?

Sure, money saving ideas are always interesting. Quite a few expats could save money in the long run by buying a good bicycle (approx. 4000 Baht), instead of always hopping on a motorbike to go to somewhere nearby. Use the motorbike just for the longer distances.

I wish i'd never discussed that device, i'm going to get myself in deed water, please go online and search for it, search for what, i know!!!!, it'll be out there soon, a clue is that it was featured in it's early development on one of those capital venture shows on TV.

The stats then where 20-30 saving, 3-4 later has passed, god knows how much spent on it's development, and i'm sitting with last years protype on my wall

again as a woman i have a pretty good grasp on the tech side of things, there is so many veriables to take into account as far as i know, it's not just a stick it up and work job, but the gismo is self diagnostic, relative to electric streaming, my condo had a day of minor electrical boxes insurted into the ringmains and a startrek device in the garage.no noise, nothing just low fuel bills.

how can you tell i've just read the manual, or should i say, a A4 peace of paper that was left with me to explain the concept last year, but it works!!!!!!

I'm sure in 5 years homepro will sell them

I go up there a fair bit.. Probably will have a month in next month or so..

For all manner of stuff from homes to buy, or rents, eating out, transportation, medical services, skilled work done (sat installs stuff like that).. Everything is substantially cheaper. I even bought my current car in CM cos it was a good deal cheaper than comparable vehicles on the island.

Hotel I stay at has lovely 1 bed wooden garden cottages, with wifi, cable TV, etc etc for 10k a month, the apartments are only about 6 or 7k a month.. Find a serviced apartment on Phuket for that kind of money for a single month.

Be the same as those magnetic devices to put on your fuel line that promise 20% more fuel economy..

Ever heard of location? Why would I pay 10K a month at a Hotel 1 bedroom cottage in Chan Mai. The second largest and smoggiest city in Thailand? I've been there but wouldn't want to live there. I pay 11K for a two bedroom house in Rawai Beach, Phuket... But I pay for my UBC, Cable and my own "secure" wifi. I can get food, liquor and most anything for less than Bangkok or even out in Sa Kaew. Oh well to each his own! I have banana trees, papaya, mango, jack fruit and vegetable garden. A wonderful GF and dog! Car and motorbikes that I bet I got for less than you. But. it's all in who and what you know! But eating out up there is pretty good and cheap. I don't eat out much anymore, so no big deal to me...

And katalady, don't let the "know it all" farangs get to you. You have a good idea, but all you got for your effort, was a bunch of cynic's responding....

To pay 200 - 500 commission for instant cheque clearing is extremely high if you are talking about cheques issued by a local bank.

Some portion of our electric bills is for phantom electric i.e. there is still electric feeding your appliances even when they are turned off. I think the simple way to prevent this is to unplug any appliances when not in use.
