FIFA has filed charges against organisers of a campaign that put 36 women in short orange dresses in Soccer City stadium, apparently to promote a Dutch beer, a spokesman said Wednesday.

The women were detained during the Netherlands-Denmark match Monday and taken to a FIFA office where they say they were questioned for several hours.

The dresses were sold with Bavaria Beer packs in the Netherlands in the run-up to the World Cup.

So if a group of women were to get identical dresses from a shop, let's say from Marks & Spencer, and wear them to a World Cup match would they be arrested for sneakily advertising Marks & Spencer?

If you didn't have an aunty from the great white north, would you have removed my post as off-topics.

Anyways, to save the confusion I will rephrase it.

"Nothing like some squeezable Dutch Ovens to get FIFA all hot and bothered."

Ironically the dickheads at FIFA have conflated what was, to 99.999% of the world, just some photos of great looking girls in sexy orange dresses into a superb worldwide marketing campaign for the brewery concerened! They must be laughing their heads off, but I feel sorry for the girls taking the can for it.

I am beginning to see more clearly now. A news article from a press agency from whose articles I believe we are not allowed to quote -- so you just have to take my word for it -- wrote that FIFA files charges over beer miniskirt World Cup stunt against the mentioned brewery, but not against any of the orange-clad women. It is said that the orange dresses were available for purchase as part of a package together with an unspecified quantity of a specific brand of beer and that the dresses had only a small tag with the beer's brand on them, invisible to the eyes of the public, I assume, as these tags are usually on the inside of the dress.

Sorry, couldn't find any more photos of the orange brigade but saw a news article indicating that the whole thing has now resulted in a diplomatic row between the Netherlands and South Africa. See next post.

Dutch ministry gives Fifa a dressing down over arrests

June 17, 2010 Edition 1

Joshua Howat Berger Sapa-AFP

JOHANNESBURG: Two Dutch women appeared yesterday in a South African court for a brewery publicity stunt that sent 36 women in orange dresses to a World Cup match, sparking furious protests by the Netherlands.

Dutch Foreign Minister Maxime Verhagen said it was "absurd" that the pair had been charged with organising the so-called "ambush marketing" campaign.

A British TV station fired one of its football pundits over allegations he had supplied the tickets for the stunt, at Monday's Netherlands-Denmark match in Johannesburg.

Morale of the story: If you go to a FIFA-organised football game be sure to cut off from your clothes all tags showing the manufacturer's or supplier's name. I guess it will be OK to leave the tags with washing and ironing instructions. Another alternative, of course, would be to go naked, but for that it appears to be a bit too cold in South Africa at this time of the year.

I hope nobody feels I'm overloading you with information but since discovering this thread I have been doing some research. I will just give you the titles and links of some of the news reports I found interesting:

Note: Contrary to my earlier assumption, the tag with the brewery's name is on the outside of the dress, after all.

Well, he's certainly been prepared to make himself look like a monumentally, thick, ill informed berk during commentry on a very regular basis.

I think all that FIFA should have done was consfiscate the dresses there and then on the spot. I am sure the fans would agree.

Who knows, this might have revealed a beer advertisement painted on the body (if the marketing guys did their job well)

The dresses are to long. :)

When the miniskirt was in high fashion, young woman wore much shorter skirts. I see that somebody has the video now on YouTube:

I like the scene of the player shown immediately after the women start taking off their outer clothing, as if he turned his head to ogle the women when in fact he no doubt was checking out the position of the other players on the field.

At least two of the dresses have a yellow image printed on the front. It appears to be a variation of the windrose that is part of the beer brewery's logo. Is it these two women who were "asked some questions", according to a FIFA statement not detained, not arrested, which makes one wonder why they were brought before a judge of the fast-track court for football hooligans and had to pay bail to obtain their release and had their passports withheld.

Maybe we are in for a new wave of football hooligans,a right tasty firm if ever i saw one :) in fact i can see it catching on big style.

Nice to actually see some supporters male or female for a change, because we deffo can't here them with the vezulus or what ever they are called.

The games and the World Cup need the colour and not just the horn!

Do you mean the member MiG16, one of the moderators of the football forum? She seems to have switched allegiance. Can't remember what her previous avatar was (a handsome Arsenal player?) but her current one looks like the Dutch national team.

Are you looking for her in this photo of the "beer babes"?

The marketing guys at this brewery will be laughing, for just a small investment in some miniskirt, they get 15 minutes of fame worldwide.

Well done.

Probably their stock value up as well.

The point is that FIFA (read: Blatter) forced...yes, forced the SA Government to install new laws BEFORE the World Cup started, allowing the Police to arrest "illegal" promotors of non-sponsors, (eventually) fine them and put them (possible!) in jail for a maximum term of 6 months.

It is of course unheard of that a private organization is "allowed" to force a government to do what the FIFA wants. Their powers are immense but dirty.

The 2 girls' passports are still withheld and they have to appear before court on June 22nd.

However, the protests by several governments and the Dutch in particular are so fierce that it is expected that the "case" will be handled without much more news and behind closed doors; but.....I could be wrong.

Bavaria got a lot of publicity but they backed off, not wanting to put the 2 girls into more trouble than they are now already; however, Bavaria booked them a suite in a 5* hotel where they can relax a little...poor girls :)
