Is it only my feelings that pattaya become full of desperate thais (mostly uneducated males from poor parts of thailand) which has so many anger, hate, envy towards the farangs. Especially thais works at jobs such: motobike taxi drivers, beach road drug dealers, different kind of touts, gogo bars staff, junk sellers, beggars or it were always like now? is it just my feelings changing?

Why do i think so, because past several months had been seen many anger explosions from thais (like in upper sentence) almost without any reason it was very discasting. Everybody says that this low season are worst ever. I see this like those thais has not enough customers, not making any money and they blame farangs. Am i right ?

People get desparate when they have bills to pay and their pockets are empty

And I believe , in this economy, more and more people are faced with no money at all

Pattaya has been sliding further and further down hill over the years

This type of Thais believe where there are masses of farangs, there is easy money

there is nothing unique about desperation. Thailand is absolutely the norm and possibly in a slightly better position than say... the desperation that exists in Mogadishu. when you say things like "Thai people seem to be X", you have to be certain what you are basing the idea on. are you comparing to last year? 10 years ago? other countries and their citizens?

Thai people are human, the good, the bad and the desperate. i talked to a Thai guy not too long ago, he was all like "hey pal" and i was like "oh, hey pal, s'up?". he was then all like, "not much". and i was all "ok krub".

How about sparing us the "uneducated males from poor parts of Thailand' mantra.

I went through the CIP Fast Track Immigration desk at Suvarnabhumi today and the lady passport officer tried to steal my King Power Fast Track discount voucher. When she handed back my passport, I asked for the voucher (she is supposed to stamp/invalidate it and tear off the stub and return to the passenger). She said she took the entire ticket and waved me on so I said I wanted the bit that she is supposed to give back to the passenger. She said something sharp and probably rude and tore off the stub and thrust it at me without eye contact.

Desperate Thai's in all walks of life, even government workers are 'hurting and angry' too.

Cue King Power working scam with Immigration Police thread.....

Try getting off the beaten path if you want to see normal Thai people. Pattaya is the armpit of the universe, Thai people are there only to make money, anyway possible. I was very disillusioned with the place on my last visit.

And whatever you do, don't rent a jet-ski under any circumstances! These jet-ski operators are the scum of the earth and it is unbelievable that they are still allowed. Pass it along......

Do you really think that young Thai men have allot of bills to pay ? They don't live the typical farang debt ridden lifestyle.

How has an expanding city been going downhill over the years ? If you want to see what a downhill city looks like then look up Detroit.

i have rented jet ski's and sport bikes in Pattaya and Phuket more then 20 times with no problems.

Its funny how some people don't understand that if you wreak somebodys property while you where renting it that you might actually have to pay for the damage. If you don't know how to ride then don't rent.

Pattaya has been sliding further and further down hill over the years

With tourism up from 5 mill in 2006 to 11 mill in 2009.. add to that the explosion in real estate which has made a lot of us very wealthy (thanks Russians hehe). I would hardly call Pattaya sliding down.

Pattaya is growing fast - and growth hurts, especially when nobody follow the rules and nobody enforce the rules.

(example when they closed down Polo, they fired 120 employees with out compensation, many of them had been working there for 8-9 years)

All we need to get a higher quality of Thais here is to make everyone follow the law, give them social security, medicare, resignation payment etc. like the government and law say that we should. Of cause Pattaya would then become a LOT more expencive, but at least we avoid most of the hardcore poor people.

^Where do you get these statistics from.

I am not a doom monger but I have to say last time I was in

Pattaya April - May 2009 the place was very quiet. I know its low season

but workers were heavily outnumbering customers in most

establishments.

.I am not a business man but I think companys building all of these

new condo's and shopping malls are really going to flop in Pattaya.

Maybe not yet but give it a few years. The amount of apartments, bars,

shops and services are completely off key with the volume of toursits

and expats. It is complete madness.

Ooops

I have traveled extensively around the globe and the "Young angry male issue "! is not just a Thai problem. I am afraid it is a world wide cultural phenomenon .You only have to visit deprived areas in large cities of any country and you soon feel uneasy and threatened I am afraid this is now the world we all live in ..

They're preparing for the boom that the new casino will bring.

Pattaya Thais are the same as they've always been. Really, they are. Among them, BTW, are some fine people, who are much more accessible if you speak some Thai.

The proportion of bad guys hasn't increased over what it was years ago. Similarly, the crime "rate" hasn't increased relative to, say, Bangkok.

And the weather isn't "the worst it's ever been"; "everything" isn't "closing down"; the "last nail in the coffin" isn't close to being struck.

Desperate Farangs

However, desperation to whinge has grown markedly among the farangs as shown by the fact that their whinges are far more exaggerated now in the past. One may speculate as to the reasons, but some of them might be that their home currencies have declined in value, some boites have moved from Beach Road to Soi Buakeow, and the whingers really don't like the more diverse tourist population that Pattaya has grown to accommodate.

I agree - total madness. the Russian Money is "black money" They are hiding it in cheap Thai Real Estate.

Your average Russian can hardly go the length of himself on a Holiday !!! Let alone buy 12,000,000 Baht Condos !!!

Current exchange rate for the Ruble to the Baht - 1 for 1....says it all ?

I remember 30 years ago when I was in India. Russians were "sent" on holiday there. The Indian Gov. was desperate to ally itself with any super power for Nuclear help and the Russians had bought all the old British Tea Plantations. Bus loads of them were dragged round the streets and markets of Calcutta...I think to show them how bad things were in other countries compared to Mother Russia...!!!

Strangely, all these years later the Russain people I see in Jomtien and Pattaya look identical. Even down to their clothes !!!

Maybe I am totally wrong...they are obviously all Multi Millionaires...thats why they stay in run down old hotels at the far end of Jomtien Beach and wear football strips they last used when they were 15....then buy 10 Condo units at a time ......

I only wish I had a crystal ball to see where Pattaya / Thailand is going over the next few years.....sadly I think further downhill...the Red Shirts are not going away just yet.

hyku if you want to increase the treasury to aid the poor Thai people thats great and I have no problem with that. How about starting with the Thai people who are extremely wealthy and taxing them - after all it is their country. If you tax tourist related items like condos, hotels, meals, etc too heavily people will go elsewhere and it does help the local economy. I get tired of seeing some of the inequalities of Thai life like kids not having reasonable clothing, education and care yet I read a son of a military officer has a fire in his new 16 million baht sports car. With much of the rich elite this money would be hard to track down and tax because it was gotten by illegal means. (graft, corruption, drugs, loansharking etc) My 2 cents worth.

The first time as a tourists in 2002.

I did like it and it was not so bad even 2 years ago.

Now it just sucks big time.

To those Pattaya apologists.

I have seen the kind that live in that hole.

Everyone has.

It is not just Thai males. Went to Central yesterday and ordered food from a stall I have been going to for some time. After handing over my money I waited for my ten baht change and it was not given. Asked the old lady about it and she said that was enough. I figured a price increase then looked at the sign and the price was the same. Asked again about my change and the coworker of the lady (also lady) stated that the price was for broth only and to get a piece of chicken was ten baht more. I then demanded the manager and the ten baht was swiftly handed over. After my meal I gave the lady the ten baht back as it was not about the money so much as treating me as a fool. I think wages in Thailand have failed to adjust to the rise in prices and people are desperate.

Here at Chaweng Beach/Ark Bar the Beach Sellers with their Laser's, the guys with the monkeys and Iguana's and especially the little girls with the flower necklaces are an absolute pain in the neck!

Not only that the prices are highly inflated and they are very persistent to make you buy something, the flower and "play game" girls simply hang the necklace around the neck of the people and then demand money, in one occasion a couple the girl readily accepted and paid the 20 Baht... then the boy he said "Its for girls!" and that he wouldn't want one... she insisted he buys' one too... then I said: "he doesn't want one, can't you hear?" she turned to me and said "Shut up!, being aggravated she walked past and kept saying, even shouting "Shut up"! And they are kids... attended by one women who always keeps at a distance...sad, wonder why this isn't cleaned up by the authorities or by the owners, it's very annoying, people are there to relax, ha ve dinner, enjoy the evening and these sellers.. every five Minutes a new one and most of them get aggravated when told "no"!

Very strange behavior as if one must buy items from them.. :annoyed:

Without accurate data it's all hearsay about how many people are up Pattaya Creek in a barbed wire canoe without a paddle? What we need is cold hard data to work with.

Pattaya Thais are the same as they've always been. Really, they are.

Absolutely not the case. The place has gone way downhill as other posters have already pointed out. But, so has planet earth laugh.gif

We'll need to agree to disagree on this point. Scams, cheats, rudeness, corruption, and sleazy characters have always been extremely common in Pattaya--as well as in tourist areas of other Thai cities. Perhaps you need to read back issues of the Pattaya Mail. Don't neglect the Letters To The Editor section. Haven't you ever heard the traditional phrase, "Screwed, blued, and tattoed" in Pattaya? The "blued" refers to bruises in this case.

You'll be happy with day-to-day Pattaya (if at all) only after gaining much experience & street smarts. When FOB, an easy mark, I also encountered lots of problems and bad characters. Now, it's smooth sailing all the time. BTW, one way that Thais can tell whether you're a target or not is whether you speak some Thai. Order in Thai and your change will usually be correct (barring the usual mistakes). Cf. the Philippines: much the same kind of thing. (Worse there, IMO.)

In the meantime, the positives (to those who like Pattaya) are all in place: beach, sea view, low prices (even if your own dam_n currency's in the pits 'cause of YOUR idiot gummint), bars, music, women, restaurants, hotels & condos to whatever spec you can afford, shopping (Central Festival and Tukcom, fantastic additions), fast motorbikes, exotic temples, and general Third World chaos & craziness.

Grannies should go elsewhere--as has always been the case. Sarasota, Florida, USA, strongly recommended: play checkers, drink sherry, waddle in the mall, go to bed at 9 PM. Very quiet.

Just what do people actually buy in Central... I've bought some housewares from the Dept store.. But all the other shops sell the same old stuff.. Little choice and hardly any stock. It just ain't all that.. okay it's better than Mike's but that ain't saying much..
